HBO Reveals Nancy Pelosi's Immediate Response to Jan. 6

 August 29, 2024

New HBO footage has exposed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's efforts to blame former President Donald Trump for the Jan. 6 Capitol incident while detailing her own strategy concerning the security lapses.

New revelations from redacted footage presented by Politico show Pelosi, in the heat of the Jan. 6 unrest, discussing real-time responses and strategy, and suggest that she soon realized that she needed to deflect from her errors with regard to National Guard deployment, something Trump has long said he wanted, as Breitbart reports.

The footage captures Pelosi being escorted from the House floor by Capitol Police during the chaos. The video, released Wednesday by Politico, provided a glimpse into the urgent discussions about security as Pelosi inquired about National Guard deployments already approved by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump's Offer to Deploy National Guard Revisited

In the days leading up to Jan. 6, former President Trump had proposed the deployment of the National Guard. However, this offer was initially declined. Pelosi's frustration over the delayed response of the National Guard is evident in the footage.

She questions the readiness and expresses dismay at the lack of preparation, emphasizing the severity of the oversight. "How many times did the members ask, ‘Are we prepared? Are we prepared?’ We’re not prepared for the worst. We’re calling the National Guard now? It should’ve been here to start out. I just don’t understand it. Why do we empower people this way by not being ready?” Pelosi stated.

Previous Admissions and Plans for Responsibility

Earlier HBO releases from June disclosed Pelosi taking responsibility for not having the National Guard in place to protect the Capitol. This new footage adds layers to the unfolding events of that day and her subsequent strategies.

Following the riot, Pelosi's focus shifted towards directing blame towards Trump, instead of pushing for the resignation of Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund.

Discussions with aides were captured, deliberating on how to address and potentially criticize Sund for his handling of the situation.

The conversations also touched upon the future of the House’s top security officer, Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving, particularly his role in securing the upcoming inauguration.

Political Maneuvering After Jan. 6

Pelosi's strategy extended to reaching out to Trump's Cabinet, urging them to consider invoking the 25th Amendment, labeling Trump "a domestic enemy in the White House."

Her deliberate focus on Trump is highlighted in her comments from Jan. 7: “I think our focus has to be on the president. Let’s not divert ourselves. I don’t want to have it on a par with the insurrection and impeachment and all of that,” she expressed.

This direction in focus was also mirrored in her views on the Capitol Police leadership. “He was throwing his own people under the bus,” Pelosi said regarding Chief Sund, reflecting her perception of Sund's actions during the incident.

The decision on whether to retain Irving for the inauguration security was also discussed, with varying opinions on his continuation in the role.

Concluding Thoughts on Capitol Security Failures

Pelosi's closing remarks in the footage resonate with a clear directive: “Let’s not mince words about this.”

This statement sums up her resolute stance on addressing the Capitol security failures and her pointed blame towards Trump.

The release of this footage has ignited further debate on the adequacy of the security measures in place on Jan. 6 and the political responses that followed.

Critics of Trump have pointed out his delayed intervention in deploying the Guard during the riot, as reported by Joel Pollak, who noted, “Trump was later faulted by critics for not intervening quickly to send the Guard during the riot.”
