Harris's Debate Prep with Google Attorney Raises Conflict Claims from Trump Campaign

 August 27, 2024

The Trump campaign is calling into question the ethics of Vice President Kamala Harris’s preparation for their upcoming debate.

Trump's concerns stem from the identity of Harris's debate coach, Karen Dunn, who simultaneously represents Google in a significant antitrust lawsuit filed by the Biden-Harris administration, as Fox News reports.

The scenario unfolds amid broader disagreements over the upcoming presidential debate rules for the event now scheduled for Sept. 10.

Dunn is not new to aiding Harris; she played a similar role back in the 2020 vice presidential debates. Additionally, her main occupation lies with the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison where she is a noted attorney. This dual role has brought her under increased scrutiny as the debate nears.

Detailed Background on Legal Proceedings

The legal battle in question is the United States v. Google LLC. Debates on Google’s digital advertising practices and their implications are set to begin in court on September 9, a day before the presidential debate.

This proximity in dates underscores the tension between Harris’s debate prep and the ongoing lawsuit where Dunn represents Google.

On top of this, the discourse around debate rules has heated up. Specific rules from a previously agreed format by both parties are now contested, particularly concerning the use of a muted microphone during the debates, according to Jason Miller, spokesperson for the Trump campaign.

Trump Campaign Vocally Expresses Concerns

Tim Murtaugh of the Trump campaign has been notably vocal about the perceived conflict, emphasizing the problematic nature of Harris's choice in debate coach.

“Kamala Harris will never stand up to Big Tech because she’s being coached on what to say in the debates by Google’s top lawyer,” Murtaugh asserted, signifying a deep mistrust of the VP's affiliations.

Moreover, Murtaugh’s criticisms didn’t stop at ethical concerns: “Think about how outrageous it is -- their administration is suing Google, but Harris is taking political advice from the defendant’s lawyer,” he continued.

This issue has been portrayed as both a conflict of interest and indicative of deeper collusion between the Biden-Harris administration and significant-tech entities.

Disputes Over Debate Formats and Rules

Debate rule negotiations have seen accusations from both sides. Brian Fallon, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign, suggests the Trump team favors muting microphones due to doubts about Trump’s ability to remain presidential.

“Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own,” said Fallon.

This back-and-forth over debate rules has been taken further with claims from the Trump side that the Harris camp is asking for adjusted formats such as seated debates and permission to use notes.

“We accepted the ABC debate under the exact same terms as the CNN debate...we said no changes to the agreed upon rules,” Miller detailed, highlighting discrepancies in negotiation stances.

Increased Tension as Debate Nears

As accusations fly, the controversy intensifies just weeks before the debate. Murtaugh’s commentary suggests that the dispute over a so-called cozy relationship between the Harris campaign and Google could foreshadow contentious debate interactions: “They don’t even try to hide their cozy relationship -- it’s all been reported by the media — but it is disgusting and dangerous,” he explained.

Murtaugh also took a sarcastic tone in addressing Harris’s reliance on experts like Dunn, remarking, “Some prosecutor she is. She's being coached by the defendant's lawyer.” These exchanges reflect not only the buildup to an intense political confrontation but also significant public scrutiny of the candidates’ preparation techniques and their fairness.

The upcoming debate promises to not only touch on key policy issues but also provide a stage for ongoing disputes over ethics, legality, and political strategy, casting a long shadow on the proceedings in the lead-up to the election. As these concerns continue to develop, they will likely influence voter perceptions and campaign tactics in the coming weeks.
