Hunter Biden grilled for hours over father's alleged involvement in business dealings

 February 29, 2024

House Oversight Committee chair James Comer (KY-01) has announced that the impeachment inquiry against President Biden will transition into its "next phase," in the form of public testimony from Hunter Biden during an open hearing.

Hunter Biden appeared on Capitol Hill for his closed-door deposition before the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees on Wednesday, as Fox News reported.

Hunter Biden's Defense

In the aforementioned proceedings, Hunter Biden robustly defended himself against accusations of involving his father in his business ventures.

He criticized the Republican-led impeachment inquiry as a "partisan political pursuit."

Hunter said, "You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn't any."

Contradictions and Clarifications

Chairman Comer reflected on the deposition after its conclusion.

"There are also some contradictory statements that I think need further review," he stated.

This acknowledgement indicates potential discrepancies in testimonies that the upcoming public hearing aims to address.

The move towards a public hearing was partly initiated by Hunter Biden and his attorney.

Some suggest that signals a demand for transparency and an opportunity to counter the allegations publicly.

Testimonies and Allegations

The inquiry has already featured testimonies from several of Hunter Biden's former business associates, including those who claim that Joe Biden was involved, in, or at the very least, aware of, his family's business ventures.

Notably, the deposition delved into an email referring to "10 held by H for the big guy," which has been a point of contention.

Addressing this, Hunter Biden reportedly dismissed the idea of his father's involvement as absurd, emphasizing his own struggles with addiction as having influenced some of his past communications.

The first son said he hopes his testimony will "put an end to this baseless and destructive political charade."

Moving Forward

As the impeachment inquiry transitions to this new phase, with a public hearing on the horizon, the focus remains on unraveling the intricacies of the Biden family's business engagements.

The anticipation of the public hearing, coupled with the promise to release the deposition transcript, marks a critical juncture in the investigation.

Comer expressed optimism about what was gleaned from Wednesday's proceedings, stating, "I look forward to releasing the transcripts as soon as both sides agree to that."
