Hunter Biden recounts harsh exchange with Jake Tapper during past family crisis

 May 22, 2025

Hunter Biden has reignited a years-old personal dispute with journalist Jake Tapper, revealing he once cursed at the anchor during a period of extreme emotional turmoil in 2015.

The conflict between former President Joe Biden’s son and the CNN anchor began when, as Hunter now claims, Tapper persistently contacted him while his brother Beau Biden was in the final days of his battle with brain cancer, a feud reignited when Tapper recently labeled Hunter “unethical” during a podcast interview, as the New York Post reports.

In a recent public statement, Hunter Biden, 55, said he lashed out at Tapper during one of the most difficult times of his life. According to Hunter, Tapper allegedly made multiple calls in 2015 while Beau Biden was hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center undergoing cancer treatment.

Hunter’s anger spurred by looming loss

Hunter described the situation as deeply upsetting, stating, “It would be impossible to forget or misremember something that upsetting and out of line during one of the toughest moments of my life.” He insisted the confrontation was real, saying, “It happened. I was furious.”

According to sources close to Hunter, Tapper allegedly followed up with a call from a blocked number, which Hunter answered, responding with an expletive. He reportedly told Tapper, “Go f–k yourself, Jake.”

Tapper has firmly denied that he ever reached out to Hunter or contacted his family during this time. “This is a patently false lie,” Tapper said. “At no point in my life have I ever called Hunter Biden -- I’ve never even had his phone number.”

Unexpected confrontation at 2018 Super Bowl

The dispute did not end there. In 2018, Hunter and Tapper crossed paths again at a Super Bowl party in Minneapolis, an encounter that turned tense according to multiple witnesses. Onlookers reported Hunter put his arm around Tapper and issued a threatening remark.

Witnesses recalled Hunter telling Tapper, “I would knock you out” if the setting had not been a public one. The moment fueled ongoing speculation about unresolved grievances between the two men.

Tapper acknowledged meeting Hunter at the event but claimed the confrontation stemmed from a different misunderstanding. He said Hunter appeared angry over a false belief that Tapper had reported on his personal life, which Tapper denied.

Tapper questions Hunter's ethics

The decades-old friction resurfaced anew following Tapper’s recent appearance on journalist Katie Couric’s Next Question podcast. During the interview, Tapper criticized Hunter in harsh terms while discussing a book he co-authored on former President Joe Biden’s cognitive health.

Tapper suggested that Hunter played an influential role within the Biden clan, comparing him to “a chief of staff of the family.” He described Hunter as “provably demonstrably unethical, sleazy, and prone to horrible decisions.”

In a pointed comment, Tapper referenced one of the most scrutinized periods in Hunter’s personal history, saying the president’s son cheated on his wife with his brother’s widow and then contributed to her crack cocaine addiction. He then added, “I don’t have a lot of personal regard for him.”

Biden allies said to have given Tapper access

Despite the conflict, Tapper’s spokesperson highlighted that the Biden family had granted Tapper access and interviews even after the alleged 2015 incident. The spokesperson questioned the credibility of Hunter’s account in light of those actions.

“The idea that Jake could do something so heartless -- and yet the Bidens would subsequently offer him multiple sit-down interviews as well as agree to him moderating the debate, all without anyone hearing about it until now -- completely defies logic,” the spokesperson said.

Tapper continues to deny all claims of having contacted Hunter at inappropriate times or reporting on his personal struggles. He maintains that any perceived hostility from Hunter stems from mistaken assumptions, not from any of his journalism.

Feud adds to questions surrounding Hunter

This revelation comes as Hunter faces renewed scrutiny related to his legal and personal issues, as well as his role in his father’s political orbit. Tapper’s podcast comments appeared timed to align with the release of his new book about the Biden presidency.

Hunter’s public response, including his direct criticism of Tapper’s past alleged actions, suggests a desire to confront the narrative head-on. The detail about the Super Bowl party adds a vivid chapter to the long-standing and personal nature of their dispute.

Both parties continue to hold firm to their version of events, leaving the public to reconcile conflicting stories about a private feud that has now entered the political and media spotlight once again.
