Israeli ceasefire appears to be holding after 5 days

 May 15, 2023

Opposing forces in the long-running Israel-Palestine conflict have agreed to a ceasefire that appears to be holding, the Daily Mail reported.

The fighting took place in the Gaza Strip, a disputed area that has repeatedly seen violent battles since Palestinian militants from the Hamas organization seized it in 2007.

The latest outbreak of violence lasted five days and claimed 35 lives, with 33 deaths in Gaza and two in Israel.

A further 190 people in Gaza suffered injuries, as well as seven in Israel.

Additionally, around 950 people were displaced from their residences, and over 50 homes were destroyed.

The conflict began after Israeli jets attacked and killed three commanders from the Islamic Jihad organization.

Egyptian officials helped to broker the deal, which was scheduled to go into effect at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not immediately comment on the ceasefire, reported NBC News.

Israel's military claimed its rocket attacks targeted military sites, but residents in the affected areas have disputed this, according to NBC.

Since Hamas took Gaza over in 2007, an Israeli-Egyptian blockade has been in place, severely limiting the movement of people and goods.

The blockade has resulted in widespread poverty, high unemployment, and deteriorating infrastructure.

Fighting in the West Bank

There has also recently been violence in the West Bank area.

NBC reported that there was an Israeli military raid in the Balata refugee camp in the area. Two Palestinians died during fighting that erupted because of the raid.

In the city of Jenin in the region, a Palestinian reportedly tried to attack Israeli police with a knife and was shot dead.

On Saturday, Israeli forces dropped bombs on an apartment owned by Mohammed Abu Al Atta, an Islamic Jihad commander.

The West Bank, a Palestinian territory, has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War.

The area is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israeli settlements, considered by some commentators to be illegal under international law, have consistently exacerbated tensions.
