Israeli President Herzog Issues Apology at American Hostage's Funeral

 September 3, 2024

During an emotional ceremony in Jerusalem, Israeli President Isaac Herzog issued a heartfelt apology for the nation's failure to rescue Israeli American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, tragically killed by Hamas.

President Herzog's apology highlighted Israel's commitment to rescuing those still captive and holding Hamas accountable, as Fox News reports.

Hersh Goldberg-Polin was captured by Hamas during a music festival in southern Israel on Oct. 7. This devastating event led to his and five others' tragic deaths under dire circumstances in the tunnels beneath Rafah, Gaza.

Goldberg-Polin, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, had immigrated to Israel at the age of seven. His life and subsequent capture became a focal point of international diplomatic efforts, including those by his family, who tirelessly advocated for the hostages' release.

Among the other victims were Israelis Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Master Sergeant Ori Danino. Their deaths have deeply affected communities across Israel and beyond.

Mass Mourning and Presidential Apology

Thousands gathered in Jerusalem to mourn the loss of Goldberg-Polin and the other hostages. President Herzog, in his speech, expressed deep regret over Israel's inability to protect its citizens from such heinous acts.

"Beloved Hersh, with a torn and broken heart, I stand here today as the President of the State of Israel, bidding you farewell and asking for your forgiveness, from you, and from Carmel, from Eden, from Almog, from Alex, and Ori, and from all your loved ones," Herzog lamented in his eulogy.

He continued, "I apologize on behalf of the State of Israel, that we failed to protect you in the terrible disaster of October 7, that we failed to bring you home safely."

International Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts

The U.S. has also been deeply involved, with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressing outrage and condolences. He reiterated the U.S. commitment to achieving a ceasefire deal that would ensure the safe release of the remaining hostages, which includes seven Americans still held by Hamas.

Goldberg-Polin’s parents have become prominent figures in these efforts, having met with global leaders including President Joe Biden and Pope Francis, and speaking at significant events like the Democratic National Convention to draw attention to their son's plight and that of other hostages.

Following the tragedy, President Biden and Vice President Harris convened with a negotiating team aimed at brokering a hostage release deal, signaling intensified diplomatic interactions to resolve the crisis.

A Call to Action and Remembrance

Herzog’s speech also emphasized Israel's "sacred and shared obligation" to rescue the remaining hostages and bring them back safely. "Decision-makers must do everything possible, with determination and courage, to save those who can still be saved, and to bring back all our sons and daughters, our brothers and sisters," he urged.

This sentiment was echoed in his pledge to hold Hamas accountable for their actions, describing them as a relentless terrorist organization committing unspeakable crimes against humanity.

"Of course, we do not forget for a moment our obligation to hold accountable the despicable murderers who butchered you, Hersh, your friends, our sisters, and our brothers. Here too, the mission is clear and binding: To continue fighting relentlessly against the murderous terrorist organization Hamas, which has once again proven that there is no end to its savagery and the crimes against humanity it is willing to commit," Herzog asserted.

Looking Forward: Safety and Security Measures

The Israeli government, following these tragic events, has vowed to reevaluate and strengthen its security measures to prevent such disasters in the future.

The national discourse has turned towards enhancing intelligence and defense capabilities to safeguard citizens against terrorism.

This incident has not only stirred a profound national introspection but also solidified a global dialogue on the responsibilities of states to protect their citizens and combat terrorism effectively.

As the community mourns, the resolve to prevent future atrocities grows, uniting diverse voices around the world in the fight against terror and violence.
