Vance Critiques Harris Over Economic Policies, Cites Higher Food Costs

 September 4, 2024

Sen. J.D. Vance, the GOP vice presidential nominee, has taken aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of making promises in her campaign that are disconnected from her current record in office.

Speaking on The Ingraham Angle, Vance argued that Harris, having been in office for more than three years, should be judged on her current policies, which he claimed have contributed to the rising cost of groceries and an insecure southern border, as Fox News reports, contending that the claim otherwise is fraudulent.

Vance’s criticism comes as Harris continues to defend her administration's recovery efforts, particularly in the economic sector.

Harris recently addressed her plans in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash and during a subsequent rally, where she emphasized the administration’s work in rebuilding the economy following the pandemic.

Harris Defends Economic Recovery Efforts

In a recent interview, Harris highlighted the steps taken by the Biden-Harris administration to support economic recovery post-COVID-19. She pointed to improved job numbers and decreased inflation as evidence of progress, though she acknowledged that more work remains to be done.

“We had to recover as an economy, and we have done that,” Harris said during the interview. “There’s more to do, but that’s good work.”

Despite these claims, Vance remains critical of Harris’ economic approach. He emphasized that if her policies were effective, they should be evident now. “If Kamala Harris thinks these policies are going to do a lot of good... she should try them out now because she’s currently in power,” Vance said, expressing skepticism over Harris’ ability to implement new plans when similar strategies have not yet yielded significant results.

Harris Proposes Economic Relief Measures at Rally

During a rally in mid-August, Harris unveiled several new economic measures, including a $25,000 subsidy for first-time homebuyers and a plan to fix food and grocery prices. Additionally, she advocated for a $6,000 child tax credit. These proposals, according to Harris, are designed to address the ongoing challenges Americans face with high food prices, even though supply chains have largely recovered.

Harris explained that while supply chain disruptions during the pandemic caused significant price hikes, prices have not dropped to expected levels. “As president, I will take on the high costs that matter most to most Americans, like the cost of food,” she stated at a rally in North Carolina.

Trump Weighs In on Harris' Economic Plans

While Harris continues to promote her economic agenda, former President Donald Trump entered the conversation, criticizing Harris’ proposals as misguided. During a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump predicted that her economic strategies would lead to negative outcomes. He referred to her price-fixing plan as “socialist price controls,” stating, “You saw that never worked before — never, ever worked.”

The former president’s comments reflect a broader critique among conservatives, who view Harris’ policies as being out of step with American economic interests. Vance echoed Trump’s concerns, labeling her economic agenda as “pro-globalism” and “anti-American worker.”

Vance Focuses on Connecting Directly with Voters

As the election approaches, Vance has been working to differentiate his campaign style from that of his opponents, emphasizing his desire to connect directly with voters. Drawing comparisons to Donald Trump’s approach, Vance stressed the importance of engaging with people in unscripted settings, away from teleprompters and pre-planned speeches.

“We don't do the scripted stuff. We don't only speak in front of a teleprompter. We actually like to get out there and give some unscripted remarks,” Vance said. He believes this strategy will help him and Trump resonate more effectively with the electorate in the final weeks of the campaign.

Polling Shows Vance Facing Mixed Reactions

Despite his efforts to connect with voters, Vance has faced mixed reviews in recent polling. According to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average, Vance holds a 44% unfavorable rating, with only 34% viewing him favorably. However, Vance downplayed the importance of these numbers, stating that he relies on the wisdom of the American people to make the right decision come election day.

“I don't put much stock in the polls... What I put stock in is the wisdom of the American people,” Vance remarked. He believes that by continuing to engage directly with voters, his message will resonate, and the electorate will ultimately support his and Trump’s candidacy.

Conclusion: Competing Visions on Economic Policy

As the vice-presidential campaign heats up, the differences between Vance and Harris have become increasingly clear.

While Harris defends her administration’s economic record and promotes new measures aimed at reducing costs for Americans, Vance argues that her policies have already led to higher prices and failed to address key issues such as the border.

Both candidates continue to focus on direct voter engagement as the election draws near, but their sharply contrasting visions on how to move the country forward are at the heart of the debate.
