JD Vance Critiques Kamala Harris for Emulating Trump's Border, Tax Policies

 August 28, 2024

At a recent rally in Michigan, Sen. J.D. Vance voiced strong criticism towards Vice President Kamala Harris for her recent policy alignments, which he claims mimic those of former President Donald Trump.

Vance, the GOP vice-presidential nominee, argued that Harris is recycling Trump's ideas rather than introducing original policies in her presidential campaign, as the Daily Mail reports.

During his address, Vance highlighted Harris's recent endorsement of a policy to eliminate taxes on tips, a proposal initially put forth by Trump earlier this summer.

This move by Harris came shortly after she launched her presidential campaign, suggesting a strategic alignment with previously successful policies.

Shift in Policy: Harris Adopts Trump's Tax Reforms

Vance pointed out that Harris's support for continuing the construction of the southern border wall, originally a cornerstone of Trump's agenda, further demonstrates her shift towards policies once championed by her predecessor.

This development followed her promise at the Democratic National Convention to sign a bipartisan border security bill, which includes provisions for the wall.

“I read a story this morning that her advisors are considering just copying all of Donald Trump's policies – they're more popular,” Vance said, questioning the authenticity of Harris's campaign strategy and her commitment to Democratic principles.

Vance Mocks Harris's Debate Preparations

The Ohio lawmaker did not stop at policy criticism.

He mocked the vice president's preparation for the upcoming presidential debate, jokingly suggesting she would mimic Trump not just in policy but also in appearance.

“In fact, I’ve heard that for her debate in just a couple of weeks, she’s going to put on a navy suit, a long red tie, and adopt the slogan Make America Great Again,” he joked.

This satirical comment underscored his view that Harris is opting for a facade of strength and popularity by aligning herself with Trump’s well-known campaign aesthetics.

Concerns Over Harris's Focus on Current Duties

Vance also critiqued Harris for what he saw as a neglect of her current responsibilities as vice president. “Stop talking about what you’re going to do, start talking about what you are going to do right now because you’re vice president,” he challenged.

His remarks suggest that Harris should be more focused on her existing role rather than campaigning on the basis of future promises, especially those that are perceived as inconsistent with her previous stances.

Labeling Harris as the "Candidate of American Decline"

Amid his criticisms, Vance pledged that the Trump campaign would hold Harris accountable for her policy shifts, labeling her as the "candidate of American decline."

This label is meant to highlight what he sees as her lack of initiative and reliance on previously successful Republican policies.

Despite his harsh critique, Vance expressed a degree of sympathy towards Harris, albeit with a sarcastic undertone.

“Now I will confess that in some ways I have a soft heart, ladies and gentlemen. In some ways, I feel bad for Kamala Harris,” he stated, only to be met with boos from the audience.

“But I really -- I’m not sure that this is a woman who knows what she actually believes. She is, if you think about it, she is just a cog in the wheel of a very corrupt system,” Vance concluded, leaving a lingering question about the sincerity and authenticity of Harris's political maneuvers as she seeks the presidency.
