How Harris Campaign Managed to Spend $277M in Election's Final Stretch

 December 7, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign demonstrated startling spending prowess in the climactic weeks of the 2024 election, even as the race concluded with her defeat.

The Harris campaign broke fundraising records and spent $277 million in the final month leading up to the election, despite ultimately losing to Donald Trump, NBC News reports.

The campaign's financial activity intensified from Oct. 25 to Nov. 25, with Harris' team raising a substantial $160 million, significantly outpacing President-elect Donald Trump's $87 million.

Extensive Spending on Media And Advertising

Both campaigns allocated the majority of their funds to media-related expenses.

Harris' campaign invested $129 million on media buys and ad production alone, compared to $95.1 million by Trump's team, underscoring a robust attempt to influence voter perception through widespread advertising.

Moreover, Harris' campaign channeled $25.4 million into direct voter contact methods such as text messaging, canvassing, phone calls, and direct mail -- far exceeding the $3 million Trump's campaign spent on similar efforts.

Harris Campaign's Strategic Event Spending

A notable portion of the Harris campaign's expenditure went towards staging high-profile events.

The campaign spent $45.5 million on events that often featured celebrities, aiming to boost voter engagement and enthusiasm.

While the celebrities were not compensated for their appearances, the campaign incurred considerable costs, including $165,000 to a production company associated with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, to cover production and travel expenses.

Continued Fundraising Efforts After Election

Despite the election results, the Harris campaign continued its fundraising efforts, collecting over $6 million from online donors in the 20 days following the election.

This post-election fundraising was partly directed towards the Democratic National Committee, assisting with ballot recounts and cures, according to campaign officials.

"The pitches were raising funds for the Democratic National Committee to help with recounts or curing ballots," one campaign official explained.

Super PACs and Their Role in Campaign

Harris' primary super PAC, Future Forward, was also a major financial player, raising over $163 million and spending $184 million during the final weeks.

This left the PAC with $47 million in debt, contrasting sharply with the Harris campaign's debt-free closure.

In comparison, Trump's supporting PACs, including MAGA Inc., did not report any debt, with MAGA Inc. ending with $6.9 million on hand.

Final Financial Wrap-Up of the Campaigns

Jen O'Malley Dillon, the Harris campaign's chair, underscored the campaign's robust financial strategy. "We are going to be in a good space across the board, across all of our entities without debt that carries forward," she stated confidently.

Meanwhile, Trump's campaign concluded the period with $11.4 million in reported debt, marking a stark financial contrast between the two campaigns in the aftermath of the election.

As the dust settles, the Harris campaign's financial decisions and aggressive fundraising efforts will leave a lasting imprint on political campaign strategies, despite not achieving the desired result.
