JD Vance Rebukes Kamala Harris for Criticism of Trump Arlington Cemetery Visit

 August 29, 2024

Sen. J.D. Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, delivered sharp criticism of Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, telling her to "go to hell" in response to her campaign's comments regarding a controversy involving former President Donald Trump at Arlington National Cemetery.

Vance's remarks came during a campaign event in Erie, Pennsylvania, in which he defended Trump amid allegations of inappropriate behavior by Trump's campaign staff at the famed cemetery, as the New York Post reports.

The incident at Arlington has sparked a heated exchange between the Trump campaign and Vice President Harris's team, with conflicting accounts of what transpired during a ceremony honoring fallen servicemembers at Section 60 of the cemetery.

Earlier in the week, NPR reported that members of Trump's campaign had a verbal altercation with an official at Arlington National Cemetery.

The official allegedly attempted to stop the Trump campaign from filming and taking photographs, citing federal laws that prohibit political activities in Army National Military Cemeteries. NPR's report also mentioned that Trump staffers were accused of verbally abusing and pushing the cemetery official.

Conflicting Narratives Emerge

The Trump campaign quickly responded to the allegations, claiming that the cemetery official had suffered a mental health episode during the interaction and denying any physical altercation took place.

Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign communications director, stated, "No physical altercation as described" occurred and that the media was blowing the incident out of proportion.

In contrast, Vice President Harris's spokesperson, Michael Tyler, condemned the incident, calling it "pretty sad" and "not surprising." Tyler's comments further fueled the controversy, leading Vance to publicly defend Trump while launching a scathing attack on Harris.

During his speech in Erie, Vance criticized Harris for her focus on the incident, drawing attention to the 13 U.S. servicemembers who died in Afghanistan three years ago.

He accused Harris of failing to conduct an investigation into their deaths, saying, "Kamala Harris is so asleep at the wheel that she won’t even do an investigation into what happened." Vance continued, "And she wants to yell at Donald Trump because he showed up?"

Gold Star Family Member Supports Trump

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Darin Hoover, a Gold Star family member, came forward to support Trump's version of events. Hoover, whose son was one of the servicemembers honored at Section 60, claimed that the Arlington staff were lying about the altercation.

"While I was there, I didn’t witness any, any physical altercation or anything like that," Hoover said. He also emphasized that Trump was invited to the ceremony by the Gold Star families and criticized the current administration for doing "absolutely nothing" to honor the fallen.

Hoover expressed his appreciation for Trump's presence at the ceremony, stating that the photos and videos taken were meant to "memorialize" Trump's actions and respect for the servicemembers. He contrasted this with what he perceived as the administration's attempts to "sweep it under the rug."

Support for Vance Among Veterans

At the Erie campaign event, Vance's remarks resonated with the audience, particularly among veterans and military families. Gene Seip, one of the attendees, noted that Vance was attracting support from the military community, saying, "One of the demographics he’s drawing is military people."

Another attendee, Chris Knight, highlighted the importance of Vance's military background, stating, "It’s important that we keep our kids here and only send them away if they have to go."

Vance's defense of Trump and his criticism of Harris seem to have struck a chord with those who feel the current administration has not adequately supported the military. His comments at the rally reflect broader frustrations within some parts of the veteran community, who view Trump's actions at Arlington as a genuine show of respect, despite the controversy.

Conclusion

The incident at Arlington National Cemetery has sparked a contentious debate between the Trump campaign and Vice President Harris's team. J.D. Vance's strong defense of Trump and his sharp rebuke of Harris during a campaign event have highlighted the deep divisions between the two sides.

With conflicting narratives and passionate responses from both camps, the controversy continues to draw attention as the 2024 election approaches.

The support for Vance among veterans suggests that this issue could play a significant role in shaping the opinions of military voters in the upcoming election.
