Joe Biden Urged to Commute Son Hunter's Sentence

 November 26, 2024

In a call for presidential clemency, Politico's Ankush Khardori has urged President Joe Biden to commute his son Hunter Biden's anticipated prison sentence, citing the move as an act of mercy amid contentious political dynamics.

Khardori argues that Republican pressure influenced the Justice Department's decision to prosecute the first son, suggesting a commutation could alleviate Biden family distress, as the Post Millennial reports.

On Sept. 5 of this year, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that President Biden had definitively ruled out issuing a pardon or commuting his son's sentence.

When questioned during a press briefing, Jean-Pierre responded unequivocally, asserting, "It’s no, it’s still no," and added, "That’s also no," regarding any possibility of Biden reconsidering a commutation.

In a Los Angeles court appearance on the same day, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine charges related to tax evasion, three of which were felony counts. These proceedings formed just one part of his legal challenges, as he faces impending sentencing dates in separate criminal cases scheduled for December 2024.

Legal Challenges Facing Hunter Biden

The younger Biden's legal troubles include a scheduled sentencing in federal court in Delaware on Dec. 12 for purchasing a firearm in 2018 while suffering from a drug addiction. Later that month, he will return to federal court in Los Angeles to be sentenced for the tax fraud charges from his September guilty plea.

Khardori contends that Hunter Biden's prosecution has been heavily influenced by political motives, suggesting that in different circumstances, such charges might not have been pursued against others similarly situated. He asserts that Republican efforts played a significant role in the decision to prosecute Hunter Biden.

Politico highlights the potential impacts of this political pressure, suggesting that President Biden could have grounds to reconsider his stance against issuing a pardon or commutation for his son. The publication notes various factors that may influence Biden’s decision-making.

Political Considerations in Biden's Decision

Beyond legal implications, the article underscores several political and historical considerations that may sway President Biden towards clemency. Among these are the perception among some of Republican influence on the Department of Justice and the broader implications for Biden's presidential campaign and legacy.

The potential return of Donald Trump to the White House is another aspect that Politico examines, painting a scenario where Biden's refusal to act could further entrench political divisions. Khardori portrays a commutation as a strategic move to shield the Biden family from further distress.

"Not a pardon exactly, but an important show of mercy," Khardori writes, adding that this gesture could spare Hunter from potentially enduring years of imprisonment and alleviate the family's suffering.

Public Stance and Ongoing Debate

Despite the pressures and arguments laid out by Khardori, President Biden has maintained a public steadfast refusal regarding clemency for his son. However, Politico acknowledges the continuing debate within political and public spheres over whether Biden might pivot from his current position.

In addressing the issue, Khardori emphasizes the broader implications of the Justice Department's actions led by Biden appointees, characterizing them as tactically advantageous for Trump's political ambitions.

He claims this trajectory underscores the increasing drama surrounding both Biden’s presidency and Hunter's legal battles.

"Thanks to President Joe Biden’s Justice Department," Khardori opines, "Donald Trump is headed to the White House, and his son Hunter might be headed to prison." In framing these events, Khardori seeks to illustrate the contentious landscape Biden faces.

Clemency as a Pathway to Mitigation

Should Biden consider reversing his stance, a commutation is suggested as a means to circumvent the ongoing turmoil. While a pardon appears off the table, easing Hunter’s imminent legal obligations might change the narrative for the Biden family.

The discussions stirred by Politico's piece exemplify broader public discourse surrounding presidential powers and the limits of political influence. It also raises questions about how personal history intersects with the political responsibilities of office.

The outcome of Hunter Biden's legal situations remains to be seen, as does the potential impact on President Joe Biden’s political future and legacy. The call for an act of mercy reflects not just familial dynamics, but the broader tensions woven into the current political fabric.
