Kamala Harris Again Faces Backlash Over Use of Accents in Public Speeches

 December 6, 2024

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, making her first public appearance since the Nov. 5 presidential election, faced substantial criticism following her address at the National Black Caucus of State Legislators' 48th Annual Legislative Conference.

In her return to the public stage, Harris's use of a perceived "fake accent" drew extensive backlash on social media, bringing to light a recurring critique during her political career, as the Times of India reports.

Harris, aged 60, recently battled Donald Trump in the presidential election only to be defeated, something which kept her out of public view since her last speech at Howard University in Washington.

Her reentry into the public eye was marked by her address at the NBCSL conference, where her remarks aimed to rally the attendees as they approached the holiday season.

Harris's Address at the NBCSL Conference

Her speech included festive greetings, with Harris wishing everyone a "happy Christmas and holiday season." However, the focus swiftly shifted to social media, where users were less receptive to her delivery.

The vice president was accused of adopting a different accent during her speech, an allegation that has surfaced before.

Critics on social media voiced their frustrations, claiming that her manner of speaking seemed inauthentic. One user remarked that she "[brought] back the fake accent," while another suggested that she was "trying out the BLACK accent again."

These allegations suggest that Harris might have been attempting to relate to the audience, but it seems to have had unintended consequences.

Not only did social media reactions target her use of accent, but there were also allegations of intoxication based on her appearance and behavior during the NBCSL conference. Some users went as far as labeling her a "total FAKE," while another alleged she had debuted a "whole new accent."

Harris's Appeal for Empowerment

In the wake of her defeat Harris conveyed a message of empowerment in a recorded video message, encouraging supporters not to relinquish their strength, regardless of recent political outcomes. "Don't you ever let anybody take your power from you," she stated.

She emphasized that the community retains the same "power, purpose, and ability to engage and inspire," even after her electoral defeat. Her words aimed to remind the audience of their resilience and potential to influence positive change.

This critique of Harris's speaking style is not entirely new, as the vice president has previously faced similar allegations. During her political career, she has often been accused of modifying her accent to appeal to different audiences. This pattern of criticism resurfaced after her recent address.

Recurring Criticism Throughout Her Career

In addition to the accent, Harris also faced  claims of appearing inebriated during her speech, echoing similar accusations made when she posted the aforementioned video on X following the November election.

Supporters of Harris may argue that these reactions detract from the core message she brings to her speeches, often revolving around unity and empowerment. However, the persistent critiques suggest a gap between her intentions and public perception.

As a prominent figure in U.S. politics, especially being the first woman and first person of color to serve as Vice President, Harris remains in the spotlight. Her role involves navigating public scrutiny while advancing her political and social agendas.

Harris's Role and Future Endeavors

Her recent appearance was a moment to reconnect with her base and continue advocating for issues she holds dear. Despite the backlash, she continues to position herself as a figure of empowerment, evident in her messages to the NBCSL conference attendees.

As discussions continue around her public persona and actions, Harris's approach to communication and public engagement may play a crucial role in shaping her political legacy. Addressing these critiques head-on could be vital in bridging the gap between her aspirations and how they are perceived by the public.

Looking forward, it remains to be seen how Harris will address these criticisms and whether she will make efforts to adjust her public speaking style to better align with public expectations. In the arena of politics, perception often plays a pivotal role, and as the vice president continues her career, adapting to the evolving landscape may be essential.
