Kamala Harris' Election Betting Odds Decline After CNN Interview

 September 1, 2024

Kamala Harris' prospects of winning the 2024 presidential election took a hit following her Thursday evening interview with CNN.

Despite a previous lead for the Democrat, Harris and Donald Trump are now neck and neck in the 2024 presidential election betting market following her latest CNN interview, according to two leading bookmakers, as Newsweek reports.

Before the interview, Harris was favored with odds of 10/11, representing a 52.4% chance of winning the presidency. However, by Friday morning, those odds had declined, tying her with Trump at 19/20, or a 51.3% probability, as reported by Star Sports.

Trump Gains Momentum After Interview

Trump, who has been trailing Harris in recent weeks, saw his odds improve over the same period. Betfair reported that his chances rose from 21/20 to 20/21, marking a significant gain in momentum in the wake of the interview.

Thursday's CNN interview marked Harris's first unscripted session in several weeks. The vice president took the opportunity to outline her administration's achievements and policy plans, particularly focusing on the middle class and economic recovery efforts.

During the interview, Harris emphasized the Biden administration's efforts to rescue the economy from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. She outlined several key policy commitments, including a promise to lower everyday costs for Americans and combat price gouging.

Policy Commitments and Economic Achievements Touted

Harris also pledged to introduce a $25,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers and to extend the child tax credit to $6,000 for the first year of a child's life.

Additionally, she highlighted the administration's success in reducing inflation to below 3% and capping the cost of insulin at $35 per month for seniors.

In a direct comparison with Donald Trump, Harris criticized the former president for failing to deliver on his promise to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices. "We did it," she said, attempting to contrast the current administration's achievements with what she said were Trump's unmet promises.

The vice president also defended President Joe Biden, praising what she said was his intelligence, dedication, and commitment to the American people. She described Biden as a leader who "cares deeply" and has the qualities that Americans deserve in their president.

Harris Responds to Trump Criticisms

When asked about Trump's recent comment that she "happened to turn Black" for political gain, Harris dismissed the remark, referring to it as part of the "same old, tired playbook." She quickly moved on, signaling her desire to focus on policy rather than personal attacks.

The shift in betting odds following the interview did not go unnoticed. Star Sports betting analyst William Kedjanyi commented on Harris's deteriorating odds, noting that she has failed to surge ahead of Trump in the market despite being the favorite just a day earlier.

"GOP supporters will hope Trump can now go on to tip the balance in his favor, before November's presidential election," he said.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom also weighed in on the betting market dynamics, noting that while the race had been tight throughout August, the momentum has now shifted in Trump's favor. "He has become the odds-on favorite again after being backed into 21/20," Rosbottom said.

Betting Markets Reflect Political Shifts

The developments in the betting markets underscore the high stakes and volatility of the upcoming presidential election.

Harris's CNN interview, intended to bolster her campaign, instead appears to have raised questions among voters and bettors alike about her ability to secure victory in 2024.

As the race for the White House intensifies, both Harris and Trump will need to navigate a rapidly shifting political landscape.

With roughly two months to go until the election, every public appearance and statement will be closely scrutinized for its potential impact on voter sentiment and betting odds.
