Kamala Harris Slammed for Imitating Donald Trump's 2015 Skit on 'SNL'

 November 4, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing backlash for her recent comedic stint on Saturday Night Live which echoed past appearances from prominent politicians.

Harris' SNL skit mirrored prior performances from by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, sparking claims of unoriginality as the countdown to Election Day draws to an end, as the New York Post reports.

The VP made an unexpected visit to Saturday Night Live, participating in a skit in which she conversed with her reflection in a dressing room, with her alter-ego played by comedian Maya Rudolph.

This comedic scene closely resembled a skit performed by former President Donald Trump on The Tonight Show in 2015.

In that performance, Trump also talked with his own reflection, portrayed by host Jimmy Fallon.

Recurring Themes in Political Humor Draw Criticism

This format was not only similar to Trump’s interaction but also recalled Hillary Clinton's SNL cameos in 2008 and 2016, in which she similarly engaged in self-reflective humor.

Observers criticized the choice for its lack of originality, highlighting a pattern of recycling political humor on the show.

Comments flooded social media and airwaves post-performance, with many pointing out the repetitiveness of the jokes.

Radio host Ari Hoffman remarked, "Kamala ripped off the same bit Trump… and Trump’s was double the length," criticizing the originality of Harris's skit.

Social media posts echoed this sentiment, with one user calling the act "unoriginal" and "cringe-worthy."

Harris' Campaign Trail and SNL Appearance Timing Questioned

Before her SNL appearance, Harris campaigned in Atlanta and Charlotte.

The timing of her show visit -- close to a crucial election -- led to discussions about whether it served as a substantive political engagement or merely a light-hearted distraction.

The senior Republican commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission criticized the appearance as potentially skirting the Equal Time rule, which seeks to ensure that opposing political candidates receive comparable exposure on public airwaves.

Further criticism came from Trump’s campaign. Spokesman Steven Cheung condemned Harris's policies and her recent SNL appearance, stating on Fox News, “Kamala Harris has nothing substantive to offer the American people, so that’s why she’s living out her warped fantasy cosplaying with her elitist friends on Saturday Night Leftists as her campaign spirals down the drain into obscurity.”

Public Reaction Mixed Over Vice President's Comedy Turn

Viewer reactions to the skit were mixed, with some enjoying the humor but many others decrying the lack of creativity.

A viewer expressed disappointment online, suggesting SNL writers must be as lazy as everyone thinks they are," referencing the recycling of jokes.

Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller humorously speculated on the future implications of Harris's appearance, suggesting it might lead to Maya Rudolph performing a somber song, as seen in past politically charged episodes of SNL.

In conclusion, while some may have appreciated the levity, the general consensus appears to tilt towards criticism over the originality and timing of Kamala Harris's comedic portrayal, casting shadows on the effectiveness of such appearances in endearing candidates to the electorate.
