Kamala Harris faces backlash over Met Gala appearance

 May 7, 2025

Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to attend a well-known charity extravaganza in New York City earlier this week has sparked widespread discussion and criticism, with her presence at the event drawing attention due to her relatively low profile following her electoral defeat to President Donald Trump.

The Met Gala, held on May 5, centered on a theme honoring Black dandyism and fashion's impact on Black identities; however, Harris's attendance prompted debates around political relevance and elitism, as reported by Fox News.

Harris’ surprise appearance marked one of her few public outings since losing the presidential race in November. The 2025 Met Gala captivated audiences with its theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” aiming to honor the influence of Black culture in fashion.

The prestigious event hosted by notable figures, including Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, and A$AP Rocky, drew celebrities and public figures to New York City.

Critics question Democrats' focus

Following the event, the Democratic Party shared a photo of Harris with the caption noting her impressive appearance. This post was met with criticism and mocking comments. Political commentator Zaid Jilani questioned the party’s decision to showcase Harris at the gala. He asked why their main social media account focused on displaying such events.

The critique extended beyond online posts. Conor Friedersdorf, another political analyst, emphasized the challenge of winning over populists and the working class.

He questioned the effectiveness of images featuring prominent party members in luxury attire. In his view, these representations could alienate voters grappling with everyday concerns.

The Met Gala's extravagant nature also faced scrutiny. With individual ticket prices set at $75,000 and tables starting at $350,000, the event’s exorbitance stood in stark contrast to the economic realities many Americans face. Despite its cost, numerous celebrities and figureheads attend as guests, invited to add allure to the event.

Luxury amid ongoing economic worry

In a Vogue interview, Harris defended her attendance, highlighting art's societal role. "Art has always had a significant impact on not just culture, but also our policies and politics," she asserted. Harris viewed her participation as a means of engaging in cultural dialogues about contemporary and future issues.

Olivia Craighead, reflecting on Harris' presence, noted her prominence as a Black political figure following Barack Obama. Given the event's celebration of Black culture, she pondered the appropriateness of her attendance.

However, she also acknowledged a disconnect between attending elite gatherings and addressing the concerns of everyday Americans, such as the impact of tariffs on grocery prices.

Social media was abuzz with mixed reactions to Harris’ presence and attire. Critic Chad Felix Greene expressed confusion over her outfit, likening it to an optical illusion. Meanwhile, columnist John Ashbrook compared her look to the villain Cruella de Vil.

Political fallout mounts as elitism alleged

On the other hand, some individuals offered praise, noting the significance of a Black politician attending an event dedicated to Black style. Harry Sisson, known for his liberal views, was among those who lauded her appearance.

The gala not only illustrated divisions in public opinion but also underscored ongoing political discussions within the Democratic Party.

Matthew Stoller sarcastically underscored an apparent lack of understanding with regard to electoral outcomes in light of such public appearances. Meanwhile, Abigail Jackson pondered the sincerity of the party's intentions.

Besides the immediate reactions, Harris highlighted ongoing debates about political representation and the party's approach to grassroots issues. For figures like Jason Miller and Ken Klippenstein, the gala's attendance raised questions about who the party's messages are intended for.

Fundraising stint follows on heels of gala

Harris returned to the political forefront right away by headlining a Democratic National Committee fundraising dinner the day after the Met Gala.

With what appears to be her renewed focus on public life, Harris seen by many as struggling to bridge the gap between the realm of the elites and everyday voter concerns, and whether she will eventually succeed, only time will tell.
