Kamala Harris Facing Internal Campaign Turmoil As Trump Surges Ahead: Reports

 October 21, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has found herself grappling with declining poll numbers and internal discontent as her presidential campaign struggles to regain its footing.

As Election Day approaches, the Harris campaign has shifted its strategy from positive messaging to more aggressive attacks on Donald Trump amid growing fears of losing key battleground states and nasty infighting, as the Daily Mail reports.

Harris entered the race with formidable momentum following President Joe Biden's decision to step down in July. However, that enthusiasm has waned as her campaign confronts declining poll ratings, particularly in critical states like Pennsylvania. These struggles have been compounded by internal criticisms centered on her leadership approach and campaign management.

Concerns Over Harris's Leadership Approach

Within the Democratic Party candidate's campaign, tensions have surfaced, notably with her campaign chief, Nikki Lu, facing criticism. Additionally, there have been reported tensions between Harris and Biden, particularly during a controversy involving Gov. Ron DeSantis and hurricane response efforts.

Although Biden has publicly expressed support for Harris, he has privately voiced concerns about the campaign's direction. A notable example came during a recent funeral in Washington, D.C., where Biden was said by lipreaders to have commented on Harris's strength compared to his own.

As Harris faces these internal challenges, betting markets reflect a shifting landscape. Trump's lead in these markets has grown to 17 points, while he has also secured what some polls say is a slim one-point advantage in battleground states.

Strategic Shift in Harris's Campaign Approach

Amid these setbacks, Harris's campaign has initiated a strategic pivot. Moving away from positive engagements, Harris now targets broader outreach efforts, centering her campaign around direct attacks on Trump.

"We need young African American men to come home," said Harris surrogate Ryan Boyer, highlighting the need for strong voter turnout among key demographics.

Harris also attempted to secure and maintain the support of Black voters with targeted advertisements. However, this approach has been met with skepticism. Some observers on social media described her ad campaigns as desperate, reflecting broader concerns about the campaign's effectiveness.

Fox News Interview Fuels More Criticism

Harris's recent interview on Fox News with Bret Baier drew criticism for her handling of key topics. A notable remark came from Steve Guest, who suggested Harris "ran into a buzzsaw" during the interview.

Political analyst Dustin Grage echoed this sentiment, labeling the interview a "total disaster" for Harris.

The broadcast failed to bolster her poll standings, with Trump's lead in betting averages widening thereafter. An unnamed Democratic official expressed frustrations, describing Pennsylvania -- a vital state for Democratic Party success -- as "such a mess."

Efforts to Appeal to Diverse Audiences

In a bid to reach diverse audiences, plans were thought to be underway for Harris to appear on Joe Rogan's podcast. This move aims to connect with young, male voters, a demographic seen as crucial for her campaign's success, but whether she follows through remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Harris has taken a more assertive stance in her rhetoric against Trump. She expressed, "Anybody who says they would terminate the Constitution...should never again stand behind the seal of the President of the United States."

Yet, as the Harris campaign leans mostly on personal criticisms of Trump, some involved worry about the effectiveness of this approach. A Democratic insider remarked that with Pennsylvania's current state, "it's incredibly frustrating."

Treacherous Road Ahead for Harris

Despite these efforts, the pathway forward remains fraught with challenges. Public figures like former President Barack Obama have weighed in on the situation, reportedly responding to Biden's concerns about Harris' flagging campaign by saying, "I know...that's true...we have time," hinting at potential opportunities for a turnaround.

However, within Harris's camp, anxiety grows. "Everybody’s very nervous," said Danilo Burgos, a sentiment that reflects the mounting pressures as election day nears.

Harris's campaign now faces a critical juncture. With Election Day rapidly approaching, the campaign's ability to adapt and address these internal and external challenges will be pivotal in influencing the outcome.
