Kamala Harris Stays in DC Amid Biden Health Concerns And Shutdown Risk

 December 22, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris canceled her planned Christmas vacation to Los Angeles to manage a series of crises in Washington, D.C.

Harris scrapped her holiday plans due to rumored health concerns regarding President Joe Biden and what was a potential federal government shutdown, as the Daily Mail reports.

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted President Biden's rumored health issues, stating that his aides have had to cancel meetings and adjust his schedule on difficult days to manage his increasingly frail condition. This report came amid critical funding negotiations in Congress that threatened to shut down the federal government.

Harris had initially planned to leave for California this Thursday but chose to stay to oversee the urgent situations unfolding in the capital. Her presence in D.C. became crucial as the deadline to fund the government loomed near.

On the day Harris was supposed to depart, she stayed back to conduct internal meetings and receive briefings from her staff, prioritizing her responsibilities as vice president over personal holiday plans.

President Biden's Frail Health Managed Behind the Scenes

Amid these developments, President Biden’s health continued to be a subject of intense focus. His aides have reportedly employed strategies like hiring a voice coach to help strengthen his weakening vocal abilities and having other officials stand in for him during critical governmental functions.

This approach was notably significant before the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, a period during which key politicians struggled to get in contact with him.

Furthermore, on Thursday, Biden made a public appearance as he walked across the South Lawn of the White House with his wife Jill and grandson Beau, after attending a mass in Delaware that commemorated his late wife and daughter.

Federal Funding Crisis in Congress

The uncertainty in Congress regarding the funding bill caused significant tension in Washington. A stopgap bill to continue funding the federal government gained House support, though Harris was on call to cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate if needed.

President-elect Donald Trump’s intervention disrupted an initial bipartisan agreement, leading to the failure of a comprehensive 1,547-page bill intended to ensure governmental operations.

A subsequent 116-page "Plan B" bill also faced opposition, failing to pass due to significant resistance from both sides of the aisle. This left the government on the brink of a shutdown if no resolution was achieved by midnight Friday, though that proved not to be the case.

Biden Administration Criticizes Republican Proposals

Throughout the negotiations, Biden maintained a low profile, with the White House publicly criticizing Republican lawmakers for abandoning the original bipartisan agreement.

The White House issued a statement emphasizing the importance of the agreement, which aimed to keep the government open and assist in disaster recovery while reducing costs.

The statement highlighted the administration's opposition to the Republicans' last-minute proposal, which they described as a "giveaway for billionaires." This critique underlines the contentious nature of the negotiations and the high stakes involved.

"President Biden supports the bipartisan agreement to keep the government open, help communities recovering from disasters, and lower costs. Not this giveaway for billionaires that Republicans are proposing at the 11th hour," read a White House statement.

The Role of Vice President Harris

With the potential shutdown approaching and critical votes possibly required in the Senate, Harris's decision to remain in Washington was seen as both a strategic and necessary move. Her involvement was pivotal in navigating through these legislative hurdles.

Staying in the capital also positioned Harris as a key figure in the ongoing governmental crisis, underscoring her role in maintaining stability during this turbulent period.

This series of events showcases the complex interplay between health issues, legislative challenges, and political strategy at the highest levels of American government, emphasizing the crucial roles played by both the president and vice president in such times of uncertainty.
