Ken Martin has emerged as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) following a decisive victory in the party’s winter meeting.

Martin secured the position after earning 246.5 votes, surpassing his competitors in a challenging race, as the Washington Free Beacon reports, with the party hoping to forge a new path apart from old guard leaders such as Nancy Pelosi -- who supported his challenger.

The vote took place in National Harbor, Maryland, where party delegates gathered to decide on the new leader of the DNC. Martin, the former leader of the Minnesota Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party, was among three main candidates vying for the role. His competitors included Ben Wikler, chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, and Martin O’Malley, a past governor of Maryland.

Martin Replaces Jaime Harrison

Martin takes over from Jaime Harrison, who previously attempted a Senate bid in South Carolina. Despite an assertive campaign in 2022, Harrison was defeated by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the DNC as it looks to regroup after recent electoral setbacks.

With 134.5 votes, Wikler was Martin’s closest challenger in the race. Despite garnering high-profile support from figures like Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, as well as financial backing from billionaires Reid Hoffman and George Soros, who contributed to his Forward PAC, Wikler could not clinch the top position.

O’Malley, another notable name, received 44 votes, officially placing him third in the contest. Prior to the election, two candidates had exited the race and thrown their support behind Martin, solidifying his base of support early on.
