Kevin Costner’s wife has filed for divorce after 18 years, 3 kids

 May 3, 2023

Hollywood actor Kevin Costner has been married to handbag designer Christine Baumgartner for more than 18 years, but that union will soon come to an end.

It was widely reported on Tuesday that Baumgartner had filed the necessary paperwork to dissolve her marriage to Costner with a divorce, according to ET Online.

The couple had been wedded in September 2004 at Costner's ranch in Aspen, Colorado, and had three children together – 15-year-old Cayden, 14-year-old Hayes, and 12-year-old Grace.

Divorce Filing Cites ‘Irreconcilable Differences’

The news was first shared by TMZ, which reported that Baumgartner had cited "irreconcilable differences" with Costner in filing for a divorce.

In response to the filing, a representative for Costner told the outlet in a statement, "It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action."

"We ask that his, Christine's, and their children's privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time," Costner's rep added.

TMZ further reported that Baumgartner is not seeking any spousal support payments from Costner but has requested joint custody of their three children.

In a response filing from Costner's attorney on Tuesday, the actor also asked for joint custody of the children, and made reference to a "Premarital Agreement" in terms of any sort of spousal support payments.

First Marriage Ended with Messy Divorce

That apparent prenuptial agreement between Costner and Baumgartner was almost certainly a result of Costner's rather costly divorce from his first wife, Cindy Silva, in 1994, according to Fox Business.

Costner and Silva had first met at California State University and got married in 1978. They would go on to have three children together – Annie, 39, Lily, 36, and Joe, 35, according to ET – and remained together for 16 years until they were divorced in 1994.

In what was arguably the most expensive celebrity divorce at that time, and amid allegations of infidelity and Silva's discomfort with her husband's acting in romantic scenes with other women, Costner reportedly settled with Silva for $80 million.

Fox Business further reported that Costner had actually met Baumgartner while he was still married to Silva but they didn't begin seriously dating until 1998 and were later married in 2004.

In the meantime, Costner had dated and fathered a child – Liam, 27, according to ET – with Bridget Rooney, the niece of then-Pittsburgh Steelers' owner Dan Rooney.

Costner Recently Praised Wife and ‘Power of Love’

The impending divorce between Costner and Baumgartner may come as a surprise to some, given that just a few months ago the actor had spoken "fondly" of his wife in an interview with People magazine.

At that time in November 2022, Costner had said of Baumgartner, "My wife does things that just completely ... It just helps. The house is prettier because of her. Everything is warmer because of her. There's these little things that she does and I think it's the power of love, but that she makes her home that way."

He had similarly spoken positively of her in an interview with People during the 2020 pandemic in which he praised their "partnership" and credited her with keeping the household running smoothly amid the COVID-related lockdowns and quarantines.

The outlet further noted that when the pair were married in 2004 after six years of dating, that wedding had come following an "ultimatum" from Baumgartner to either settle down and raise a family with her or move along, and Costner clearly chose the former over the latter of those options.
