Kimberly Guilfoyle and Don Jr. to attend GOP debate in show of support for former President Trump

 August 22, 2023

Kimberly Guilfoyle and Donald Trump Jr. will attend Milwaukee's upcoming GOP debate, signaling strong support for former President Donald Trump amidst his decision to abstain from participating.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. will, in essence, represent the former president and is seen as a move designed to show support for the candidate, who has chosen not to attend himself, as the Daily Mail reported.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr. to Attend

The pair is set to make an appearance at the long-awaited inaugural Republican debate.

A spokesperson for the couple confirmed their attendance. While it remains uncertain if they will be part of the audience, both are scheduled to address the media before and after the debate.

Former President Donald Trump, on the other hand, has announced his decision to skip both the first and second Republican primary debates.

These debates are sponsored by Fox News. Despite qualifying for the event and leading in the polls for the GOP presidential nomination, Trump has chosen to stay away.

Trump's alternative plans

Instead of attending the debate, the former president will be engaging in an online conversation with Tucker Carlson.

Carlson, a former Fox News anchor, remains under contract with the network even though his show is no longer on air. Reports suggest that this interview has already been recorded.

Trump will not be without representation in Milwaukee. Apart from his son Don Jr. and his fiancée Guilfoyle, other prominent figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14) and Kari Lake will also speak on his behalf.

Trump's presence still felt

Despite his physical absence, Trump's influence on the debate is undeniable. Moderators Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum have indicated their intention to question other contenders about the various indictments the former president is currently facing.

Baier commented on the situation, stating:

How the other candidates react to it will be interesting. In the GOP primary, we have seen these indictments increase his polling numbers, increase his fundraising. How others react to it and how differently they approach it will be a part of this primary and this debate.

Trump's Decision and Implications

The final list of participants for the debate will be confirmed soon, leaving Trump with a window to reconsider his decision.

However, he has expressed his belief that there's no need for him to join the debate, given his strong position in the polls.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump posted:

People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate? I’M YOUR MAN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

If Trump decides to appear with Carlson while the debate is taking place, it could lead to a significant viewership clash.

Charges Against Trump

Recently, Trump faced his fourth indictment.

The charges stem from his alleged interference with Georgia's 2020 election results.

Additionally, he faces federal charges in two separate cases and charges in New York related to payments made to Stormy Daniels.

Upcoming GOP Debate

The upcoming GOP presidential primary debate will take place at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Among the candidates who have qualified for the debate are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.

Some candidates claim to have qualified, but the Republican National Committee has yet to confirm their eligibility.

To be eligible for the debate, candidates must meet specific donor and polling thresholds. They are also required to pledge their support for the eventual Republican nominee.
