King Charles set to fire 20% of his management staff to save money

 August 27, 2023

Britain's King Charles III is taking significant steps to refine the Royal Household's operational structure. The intention is to pare down by approximately 20% of the middle-management staff across the royal palaces, as the Daily Mail reported.

Sources suggest that the King and Queen Camilla have observed redundant roles within the household and are keen on making the system more streamlined.

Impact on Royal Residences

The reorganization will affect primary royal residences, including Buckingham Palace, Sandringham, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral.

This move is consistent with King Charles's overarching ambition to modernize the Monarchy and align it with the present times, potentially touching dozens of employees.

An insider mentioned the prevailing sentiment about staffing, emphasizing the plethora of roles.

The insider stated, "There are far too many assistants to assistants. The King and Queen would prefer to pay people proper wages top to bottom but have less people. For instance, there are chefs for them and chefs for the staff. Why, they ask, can't there be one lot of kitchen staff for everyone?"

Camilla is also emphasizing a balance among the staff, being particularly attentive to the redundancy in roles such as senior and executive housekeepers. She's consulted the Master of the Household, Vice-Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt, on this matter.

Camilla's Perspective & Modernization Steps

While King Charles recently received a guard of honor at Balmoral, Camilla, having a preference for Birkhall, has opted to reside there. Birkhall, a place she has long shared with Charles in Scotland, offers a more intimate environment.

A close source remarked, "She is dipping in and dipping out while the King is staying at Balmoral. She is staying at Birkhall where she has a limited number of loyal staff -- her people."

The King's inclination towards a trimmer Monarchy is well known. His vision is to have a closely-knit royal circle, which might include significant figures such as the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex.

However, in an interview, Princess Anne recently expressed reservations about this approach, noting that the Royal Family might already be streamlined enough.

Furthermore, King Charles is considering trimming the number of royal residences. Andrew has been asked to vacate the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Earlier, Harry and Meghan moved out from Frogmore Cottage, marking a shift in royal accommodations.

King Charles's Staffing Changes at Clarence House

Upon ascending to the throne after Queen Elizabeth's demise, Charles had intimated that around 100 staff at Clarence House could face potential redundancies.

While many anticipated relocating to Buckingham Palace, the King's top aide, Sir Clive Alderton, communicated that several roles would be obsolete.

According to the recent Sovereign Grant report, a sum of £444,000 was used for "exit packages" for 16 of the late Queen's staff members. As of March's end, the Monarchy employed under 500 permanent workers across the royal households.

Last October, Camilla eliminated the long-standing ladies-in-waiting role, favoring a modern, streamlined staff. Her current team adopted those duties, humorously termed a "two for the price of one" arrangement. The late Queen had seven ladies-in-waiting at the time of her passing.
