Local Democrats Join in Renaming Florida Roadway After Donald Trump

 December 4, 2024

In a significant political gesture, the Miami-Dade County Commission has renamed a major roadway in honor of former President Donald Trump.

A 9-1 vote, which included support from both sides of the aisle, has led to the co-designation of Palm Avenue in Hialeah as "President Donald J. Trump Avenue," as the Daily Caller reports.

The commission’s decision occurred on a Tuesday, marking a rare instance of bipartisan agreement with four Democrats joining Republican members in approval.

Details on the Commission's Vote

The motion for renaming was led by Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera and received backing from four other Republican commissioners.

Notable Democratic commissioners who supported the motion included Oliver Gilbert, Danielle Cohen Higgins, Kionne McGhee, and Micky Steinberg.

Marleine Bastien was the sole dissenting vote, simply stating her opposition with, "I am voting 'no.'"

Significance of New Designation

Commissioner Cabrera took to Twitter to announce the change.

He emphasized the avenue's new name as a tribute to Trump’s “legacy of championing freedom and opportunity.”

Cabrera further commented on the strong support Trump received from Miami-Dade County in the past elections.

"President Donald J. Trump Avenue is official in Miami-Dade County! Today, we ratified the City of Hialeah’s initiative to honor President Trump’s legacy of championing freedom and opportunity by co-designating Palm Avenue — a vital artery in our community — as ‘President Donald J. Trump Avenue,'" Cabrera tweeted.

Community and Political Implications

The avenue, now bearing Trump’s name, runs through a part of Hialeah where he won by a significant margin in the previous election, securing the city by 53 points.

The renaming reflects not only political allegiance but also the significant influence of Trump’s policies and his administration's impact on the local community.

Cabrera highlighted that the designation serves as a "lasting tribute to his leadership and vision for our nation," indicating the deep roots of Trump's support in the area.

Future Impact on Local Politics

With this new designation, the avenue's new signs will soon be installed on infrastructure owned by Miami-Dade County.

This will further cement this honor in the physical and political landscape of the area.

This decision could signal shifting political dynamics in the county, particularly considering the support from both sides of the aisle.

Such actions might influence future political campaigns and voter sentiments in the region.

It also sets a precedent for other counties and municipalities to consider similar honors for political figures based on local support and political legacies.
