Majority of US Views Illegal Immigration as True Crisis, Poll Shows

 April 27, 2024

A new survey indicates a profound concern among Americans over illegal immigration, framing it as a crisis and expressing discontent with governmental handling.

A significant majority of U.S. residents deem illegal immigration a genuine crisis, unfavorably commenting on the Biden administration’s approach, as Fox News reports.

The poll, released by Axios and conducted by Harris organization, reveals that nearly two-thirds of the populace views the situation as a serious concern.

This sentiment spans across party lines to some extent, although it is more pronounced among Republicans.

Voter Concern Peaks as Border Crossings Escalate

Illegal immigration has risen as a key issue for voters, particularly in light of record-breaking numbers of border crossings since President Joe Biden's inauguration. In February, Fox News reported nearly 7.3 million illegal border crossings have occurred under the current administration.

The survey assigns significant blame to the Biden administration, with 32% of respondents identifying it as the principal contributor to the crisis. In contrast, other factors and previous administrations receive less blame.

Public Opinion Clashes on Deportation and Asylum

Regarding solutions, the Axios survey finds that 51% of Americans support mass deportations of illegal immigrants. This includes 42% of Democrats, 46% of independents, and a notable 68% of Republicans advocating for strong measures.

Concurrently, there is also strong support for expanding legal pathways for immigration, with 58% of respondents in favor. Moreover, 46% agree that asylum seekers should be protected, provided their cases are legitimate.

Administration Faces Criticism Amidst Political Standoff

Both President Biden and former President Donald Trump visited the southern border in late February, each blaming the other for the ongoing issues. This comes as the White House faces criticism for not effectively managing the crisis, exacerbated by a political impasse over immigration legislation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson's spokesperson indicated that it is unlikely the Democrat-controlled Senate will pass any significant border security legislation this year, hinting at continued legislative challenges.

Economic and Security Concerns Fuel Anxiety

Public concern is also driven by fears over "increased crime rates, drugs, and violence," which 21% of Americans see as the most troubling impact of the crisis. Additionally, the financial burden on taxpayers and risks related to national security and terrorism are significant worries for 18% and 17% of the population, respectively.

These concerns reflect broader anxieties about the impact of illegal immigration on American society and its resources, shaping public opinion and policy debates.

Political Rhetoric Intensifies as Solutions Remain Elusive

President Biden has labeled the immigration system as "broken," blaming Republicans for obstructing a bipartisan border bill which he describes as containing "the toughest and fairest reforms to secure the border we have had in decades."

Republicans, on the other hand, call Biden's approach "preposterous," insisting that the administration owns the problem, a claim supported by the poll's findings.

Polling Data Reflects Broad Discontent With Border Policy

Mark Penn, chairman of the Harris Poll and a former Clinton pollster, interprets the results as a stern warning to politicians, particularly to Biden, to get the situation under control. He also noted that attempts to shift responsibility to Trump are unlikely to succeed.

With such polling data, it becomes clear that the American public is demanding decisive action on illegal immigration, reflecting deep-seated concerns about governance and policy effectiveness.

In conclusion, the Axios poll underscores a critical view of the Biden administration's handling of illegal immigration, with a strong call from the public for reforms and action.

The concerns range from security risks to economic impacts, showing a complex landscape of issues that Americans want addressed comprehensively.
