Mamdani falters at bench press attempt during Brooklyn's 'Men's Day' event

 August 25, 2025
At a Men's Day event in Brooklyn, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani faced embarrassment when he could not successfully bench press 135 pounds, as the New York Post reports.Mamdani's difficulty during a physical demonstration has sparked criticism from political adversaries in the race for New York City Mayor. At age 33, the Democratic Party nominee and a declared Socialist, was at the Brooklyn Museum area participating in Men's Day activities when the incident occurred.

It was meant to be a light-hearted display of fitness, but it turned into a public struggle as he required substantial assistance for bench pressing.

Light-hearted challenge turns embarrassing

As eyewitnesses and captured photos attest, Mamdani could not complete two repetitions without full help from a spotter, a member of the "500 Men Making a Difference" organization.

This physical trial was swiftly seized by his opponents. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and current Mayor Eric Adams pointedly used the incident to question Mamdani’s suitability for mayorship, equating physical strength with leadership capability.

Mayor Adams, participating in the same event, successfully handled the bench press with only minimal assistance.

He managed multiple repetitions, drawing a stark contrast to Mamdani's performance.

Political rivalry heats up amid fiasco

Adams remarked pointedly about the age and experience difference, suggesting Mamdani lacked the rigor of lifelong challenges, contrasting their physical performances to their life journeys.

Cuomo took to sharper criticisms, calling Mamdani "Mamscrawny" and hinting that he may be ineffective in handling the demanding role of mayor, repeating, "This guy can’t bench his own body weight, let alone carry the weight of leading the most important city in the world."

Adding to these jabs, Adams also quipped about Mamdani’s potential as a non-strongman-type leader, a play on words referencing his physical and possibly political capabilities.

Mamdani attempts to recover

Despite the setback at the bench press, Mamdani displayed sportsmanship, thanking his spotter and engaging in other event activities.

He showcased better skills at soccer, skillfully hitting a target after removing his designer boots.

Mamdani also took the stage, making a speech about unity and anticipation for his potential future leadership, in addition to engaging with an event DJ, showing his lighter, approachable side to the public.

His adaptability and engagement across diverse event activities underscored his campaign messages about inclusivity and vibrant community involvement.

Community, politics blend at local event

The Brooklyn Museum’s vicinity buzzed with activities all day, ranging from outdoor gyms to music performances and car shows, all part of the Men's Day celebrations designed to engage the community and highlight local talents and interests.

Candidates often attend such locally-focused events to connect with constituents in less formal, more personal settings, which can provide memorable visuals but also unexpected challenges, as was the case for Mamdani.

While political figures often face both elevation and critique based on their public appearances, Mamdani’s Men's Day experience was a profound reminder of the physical and metaphorical weights political candidates must lift in their quest for office.
