Massive Cache of Explosives Discovered at Man with Anti-Biden Sentiments
Brad Spafford of Virginia has been apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) following the discovery of a significant collection of "finished explosives" at his property.
This arrest raises concern as it took place just ahead of President Donald Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration, and also due to Spafford's apparent advocacy of political assassinations and his hostility toward President Joe Biden, as the Daily Mail reports.
According to court documents, Spafford, residing with his two minor children on his 20-acre farm, located a three-hour drive from Washington D.C., has been arrested following the discovery of approximately 150 explosives on his premises, constituting the biggest bust of such nature to date.
The series of items found include pipe bombs, dangerous devices labeled 'lethal', and other unidentified materials that have shocked the local community.
Alarming Activities Prompt Investigation
Information provided by a concerned neighbor led to the arrest, raising alarms about Spafford's usage of images featuring President Joe Biden for target practice.
The neighbor also reported an apparent accident involving a homemade explosive that cost Spafford three fingers on his right hand, in addition to his open embrace of political assassinations.
Detailed Search Reveals Chilling Outcomes
During the operation, officers discovered unattended pipe bombs in a backpack and a bedroom, along with 'lethal' devices in a barn within the property.
The majority of the seized explosives, tools, manufacturing materials, homemade fuses, and sections of PVC pipe were discovered in Spafford's detached garage.
A perilous substance, known as the explosive HMTD labeled as "Dangerous" and "Do Not Touch," was found inside Spafford's freezer.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings Intensify
Spafford was officially charged on Dec. 10 for improper weapon registration, as per court documents.
Meanwhile, the prosecutors argue for Spafford's continued detention, considering him an extreme risk to community safety.
Investigations were initiated when a confidential source reported Spafford's hand injury from an explosion in 2021, alongside his stockpiling of weapons and homemade ammo.
Lawyers Deny Allegations, Claim Innocence
Spafford's legal team is challenging these claims, asserting that there isn't any compelling evidence to prove that Spafford has threatened anyone.
They also point out Spafford's clean criminal record and no history of substance abuse or mental illness.
According to them, the testimony of a neighbor which includes rumors and hearsay has been accepted without objection, fueling arguments about Spafford’s innocence.
National Security Concerns Escalate
An unsettling find among Spafford’s possessions was a notebook packed with 'recipes' for explosives.
The importance of this case to the FBI is exemplified by the revelation of such a radical figure and his explosive arsenal coming in the midst of high national alert due to the presidential inauguration.
While the debates surrounding the severity of his crimes continue, a rural setting birthing threats of political assassinations sends shockwaves across the nation.
