Meghan Markle marriage has led Prince Harry to lose his friends

 September 1, 2023

Prince Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle has reportedly led to a rift between him and many of his longtime friends.

Grant Harrold, former butler of King Charles, and other experts have shared their insights on why this reported rift is occurring. Harrold has noted that Harry has cut ties with the friends he and Prince William once shared, and this distance is also evident in his relationship with his sibling, as Fox News reported.

Harrold, speaking on behalf of Spin Genie noted that quite a few of Harry’s friends have not heard from him at all for quite some time. He also mentioned that the Duke of Sussex did not attend the wedding of his longtime friend Jack Mann in July, even though Mann had attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in 2018.

Experts weigh in on the situation

British royal family expert Hilary Fordwich and author Christopher Andersen have also shared their thoughts on the situation.

Fordwich explained that the distancing began when Meghan was introduced to Harry's friends during a Sandringham country estate shooting party in 2016.

He noted that since that event, the friends have kept their distance, as has Harry.

Andersen pointed out that the physical distance and continued scrutiny over Harry's relationship with the royal family make it difficult to maintain old friendships.

He explained that when "Megxit" first occurred, William and Harry's friends were forced to choose sides.

Andersen added that even brothers like Henry and Thomas Van Straubenzee, who have been friends with the princes since childhood, were forced to choose one over the other, causing friction in their own families.

Harry's life centered in California

Andersen also noted that Harry's life is now centered in California, not London.

He explained that logically, Harry has grown closer to Meghan's crowd, as he can't just drive a few miles to attend a friend’s wedding in the English countryside as he did so many times in the past.

Andersen explained that the lack of opportunities to interact with his old friends back in England is not just because of the physical distance, but also because every time Harry travels back to England, speculation about a meeting with his father, King Charles III, and his brother runs wild.

Prince Harry is expected to return to the U.K. for a charity awards ceremony -- reportedly without Markel -- and then to travel to the Invictus Games in German, reportedly without Markle.

Prince Harry to attend Events in the U.K.

The 38-year-old prince is expected to attend a charity awards ceremony the day before the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

Harry, a longtime patron of the U.K. charity WellChild, will attend its annual awards ceremony in London on Sept. 7 to mark the achievements of and service to seriously ill young people.

Harry is also reportedly attending the Invictus Games, the international sporting competition he founded for wounded military personnel and veterans.

The games open in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Sept. 9, and Markle is reportedly expected to join her husband for the event.
