Men Injured in Trump PA Rally Shooting Invited to Attend Inauguration

 January 11, 2025

David Dutch and James Copenhaver, both victims of the July assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump, have been invited to attend his upcoming inauguration festivities.

The two men were shot during a rally for Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, which also resulted in the death of a firefighter, Corey Comperatore, as Breitbart reports.

Dutch, a former U.S. Marine who served during the Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations, and Copenhaver, a retired liquor store manager, survived after they were shot during the frightening attack.

During the rally, a gunman named Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop, injuring President Trump himself with a minor ear wound. First responder Corey Comperatore died in the attack while attempting to protect his family.

Dutch and Copenhaver have expressed their gratitude towards President Trump for the invitation to join in the inaugural events. As reported by Fox News, they stated that they feel genuinely valued by the president and his team for their act of inclusion. In a statement from their lawyer, it was mentioned that both individuals are "honored to take part" in such significant proceedings alongside the new administration and other attendees.

An Emotional Experience for Shooting Survivors

Dutch described the incident with intense emotion, likening the impact to being struck with immense force in his chest. The traumatic events have left him feeling aggrieved, as he expressed anger about the incident's occurrence. "It should have never happened," Dutch stated, pointing out lapses in the security arrangements.

Copenhaver also voiced concerns over the lack of proper safety measures during the rally, indicating the unfortunate events might have been avoided if security had been more stringent.

Sharing their sentiment, their attorney reinforced that while Dutch and Copenhaver have been given the monumental opportunity to attend the inauguration, they remain mindful of the loss suffered by the Comperatore family.

Comperatore's daughter offered touching remarks about her father's heroics during the shooting. She recounted how he quickly moved to protect her and her mother by shielding them from the incoming gunfire, ultimately sacrificing himself in the process. His brave actions underscored his deep love for his family.

Reflecting on Security Concerns

In the wake of the events, Dutch has contemplated legal action against the Secret Service, hinting at potential shortcomings in their preparedness or execution of their duties at the rally.

While the fears and concerns from the incident still linger, Dutch and Copenhaver’s attendance at the inauguration represents a glimmer of hope and symbol of resilience.

The attacker, Crooks, was ultimately neutralized by trained sharpshooters on the scene, preventing further catastrophe. However, the harrowing events of that day are a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required in safeguarding public figures and their audiences.

Trump has expressed consistent interest in the recovery and well-being of Dutch and Copenhaver, maintaining communication with them throughout their rehabilitation process. This ongoing relationship between the president and the victims of the rally shootng underscores the sense of solidarity and support extended by the incoming administration.

Poignant Invitation to Attend

As Jan. 19 approaches, when Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in Washington, D.C., the invitation to attend the inauguration serves not only as a gesture of appreciation but also as an acknowledgment of the trials faced by these men. The invitation is seen as a poignant reminder of their resilience and the shared experiences arising from the tragic event.

Even amid the solemn reminders of July’s incidents, there is a hopeful outlook shared by many involved about the path forward. The stories of courage and camaraderie among those present during the attack provide a shared understanding of the sacrifices made and the importance of unity.

The inaugural weekend will undoubtedly carry a weight of remembrance for those affected by the shooting, with both Dutch and Copenhaver expected to reflect on their own experiences and the broader implications of such violence.

Their presence at the inauguration will serve both as a solemn reminder of the past and a hopeful step into the future, celebrating the perseverance of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Guided by their experiences, Dutch, Copenhaver, and all attendees will look towards a new beginning marked by the inauguration ceremonies. Solidarity, resilience, and remembrance will undeniably mark the agenda as the nation witnesses the unfolding of yet another historical chapter.
