Michael LaRosa Critiques Harris's Campaign Strategy in Fox News Interview

 August 31, 2024

Former White House insider Michael LaRosa has publicly criticized Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign approach during an appearance on Fox News.

In a critical review of Fox News' program, LaRosa, who at one time worked as a top staffer to first lady Jill Biden, expressed concerns about Vice President Kamala Harris using a restrictive media strategy, potentially impairing her public and media relations, as the Daily Caller reports.

LaRosa's comments came during a segment on Jesse Watters Primetime, a key platform for political discourse. His critique centered on what he perceives as Harris's adoption of "the Biden playbook," which involves limited engagement with the media.

According to LaRosa, such strategies undermine trust and goodwill between a political figure and the press, elements he believes are crucial for any successful campaign.

He pointed out that minimizing press interactions could be detrimental in the long run, especially when a politician's support from the media is needed.

The former press secretary emphasized the adverse effects of ignoring the media's role in a campaign, highlighting the risks of eroding trust and goodwill.

"It’s a process story which is the worst thing you could do. And one of the things that unfortunately the Biden team did was they ignored the press. And the problem with that is when you need the press, you lose goodwill, you lose trust. He had none of it by the end which is what really did him in," LaRosa commented.

LaRosa Advocates For Openness In Political Communication

He advocated for a more open approach, suggesting that Harris should engage more freely and frequently with the media. LaRosa stated, "That’s unfair to do her frankly. She should be establishing a cadence of talking to the press off the cuff. Actually, people connect, voters connect when you do make mistakes, and mistakes are forgiven."

This statement echoes his belief that genuine interaction with the press, even with potential slip-ups, can foster stronger connections with the electorate.

In contrast to his advice, Harris's first major campaign interview since announcing her presidential bid was conducted by CNN's Dana Bash and featured several controversial topics.

Kamala Harris Faces Tough Questions in CNN Interview

The CNN interview, Harris's debut campaign interview, also marked her formal introduction of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice-presidential choice to the cable news viewing audience. The interview spotlighted several contentious issues, including Walz’s past military service statements and Harris's inconsistent policy positions.

Harris defended her campaign's policy approaches during the CNN interview in response to criticism about the absence of detailed policies on her campaign website. Dana Bash had pointed out the noticeable lack of specifics regarding her platform.

The VP argued that her core values have remained consistent despite criticisms, focusing on her record with the Inflation Reduction Act as evidence.

She elaborated on her commitment to tackling the climate crisis through measurable objectives, stating, "I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is that my values have not changed,” Harris explained.

“You mentioned the Green New Deal. I have always believed, and I have worked on it, that the climate crisis is real, and that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time. We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act. We have set goals for the United States of America, and by extension, the globe around when we should meet certain standards for reducing house gas emissions, as an example, that value has not changed."

Challenges Ahead for Harris in Media Engagement

While Harris argues that her fundamental values remain unchanged, the challenges of her campaign, especially regarding media interaction and policy clarity, continue to draw significant attention and scrutiny.

Her approach to these challenges may very well shape her public reception and viability as a candidate in the ongoing campaign.

As the political landscape heats up, the strategies adopted by Harris and her team in addressing media engagement and policy clarity will be pivotal. Observers and analysts will be watching closely to see if Harris takes LaRosa's advice to heart or continues along the current trajectory.
