Millions Spent by Biden Administration on Military Diversity Initiatives

The Biden administration's decision to allocate significant funding towards diversity and inclusion efforts within the military has sparked debate and scrutiny.

The Defense Department under President Biden has directed millions of taxpayer dollars to external organizations to champion diversity, sparking criticism regarding priorities of military strength versus ideology, as the Daily Wire reports.

This initiative, while aimed at enhancing inclusivity within military ranks, has faced backlash for potentially compromising national security and readiness.

Beginning with contracts supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the U.S. military, these endeavors incorporated partnerships with academic institutions and consultancy firms to endorse race-based advancement.

Critics highlight that during a period marked by recruitment challenges, these allocations might detract from essential military preparedness.

Funding and DEI Partnerships

Among these partnerships, the Department of the Navy invested $760,000 in a STEM program designed to advance candidates from marginalized backgrounds at the University of Missouri Kansas City.

In a broader inclusion effort, Cornell University received approximately $202,000 to offer training aimed at reducing unconscious bias and fortifying an inclusive environment within military operations.

As part of the strategy, the RAND Corporation was engaged to assess and recommend approaches for dealing with pushback against DEI programs within the armed forces. Meanwhile, BCT Partners was contracted to develop a Diversity Action Plan for Defense Department schools.

From 2022 through 2024, the Pentagon requested an estimated $270 million to fund DEI initiatives. These efforts aligned with a series of presidential decrees from Biden embedding DEI objectives throughout federal agencies, including military and intelligence sectors.

Pentagon's Financial Commitment to DEI

The investment in DEI initiatives extends beyond financial figures, reflective in the controversy it has spurred. Critiques from bodies like the Functional Government Initiative questioned the prioritization of DEI over operational readiness. A spokesman argued that at a time when global threats are rising, the Defense Department’s focus should return to enhancing military effectiveness.

Peter McGinnis from the Functional Government Initiative voiced concerns, stating that heightened emphasis on DEI contradicts the goal of maximizing readiness.

He underscored the notion that individuals enlisting in the military do so to defend the nation, not engage in abstract training sessions that could potentially erode cohesion.

The altered outcomes of DEI-focused projects were evident when the Defense Department adjusted its STEM program criteria at the University of Missouri Kansas City after a Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action.

Despite reforms, the program remains rooted in promoting diversity among candidates from traditionally underserved demographics.

Revising Military Priorities Amid Challenges

In addition to these funded initiatives, consultants from RAND Corporation reported increased resistance to DEI across various sectors. They warned that discriminatory attitudes were growing, and recommended that military branches, like the Air Force, shape new approaches to minimize resistance to these diversity efforts.

The wave of initiatives traces back to a broader trend initiated by Biden's administration through multiple executive orders. These orders reinforced DEI values within vulnerable structures and extended them comprehensively with the agenda of federal uniformity, including military confines.

The dialogue surrounding DEI efforts within the armed forces is multifaceted. While the objectives aim to integrate an inclusive perspective, opponents argue this could pose a threat to operational efficiency at a sensitive time for national security.

As critics demand a focus on fundamental military training over ideologically charged programs, the debate over balancing diversity and readiness persists.
