Minnesota Business Council Critiques Walz Over 2020 Riot Response

 September 14, 2024

Minnesota's private sector is openly rebuking Gov. Tim Walz for his handling of the 2020 protests, ignited by George Floyd's tragic death. The repercussions of these events have been long-standing and deeply felt within the community.

Jim Schultz of the Minnesota Private Business Council recently offered his own testimony, pointing out severe lapses in the governor's decision-making that significantly impacted state businesses during the riots, as Fox Business reports.

The protests escalated into riots in Minneapolis and St. Paul shortly after George Floyd’s death in May 2020, leading to severe damage across residential and business sectors.

Delayed Response and Communication Breakdown

During the riots, the state administration, led by Walz, was slow to act, initially refusing to deploy the Minnesota National Guard amidst urgent calls for support from local businesses. This response, or lack thereof, was a critical point of contention in Schultz's testimony to the Senate.

It wasn't until May 30, 2020, several days after the riots began, that the National Guard was activated. This delay contributed to the widespread damage and heightened the crisis, according to Schultz.

The inability to promptly address the urgent needs of the state not only escalated the physical damage but also deepened the economic wounds that Minnesota continues to grapple with, Schultz explained.

Economic Recovery Hindered by Slow Response

Minnesota’s economy, according to Schultz, is still reeling from the slowest growth in its modern history, a direct aftermath of the 2020 disruptions. He attributes this stagnation to the lingering effects of the riots and the governance choices made during that time.

This slowdown is palpable across the state's business sectors, which are still navigating the challenging aftermath of the riots, underscoring the long-term consequences of the delayed governmental response.

In his stern critique, Schultz condemned Walz’s pride in his crisis management, arguing, "If that was success, I would hate to see what failure looks like."

Broader Social and Safety Implications

The social fabric of Minnesota has also been strained, Schultz noted, particularly affecting those in less protected areas. He highlighted ongoing public safety concerns and issues like the escalating fentanyl crisis.

For many ordinary citizens, the aftermath of the riots has translated into an ongoing struggle with decreased public safety and limited mobility, severely affecting their quality of life.

The foundational shifts in Minnesota’s socio-economic landscape continue to present significant challenges, reshaping the state’s future trajectory.

Potential National Ramifications of Local Governance

In reflective ominous terms, Schultz expressed his apprehension regarding Walz's possible future roles on the national stage. Echoing broader concerns within the business community, he highlighted the potential risks of such governance styles influencing national policies.

This perspective from a seasoned business leader underscores a critical view of leadership that may have formidable implications beyond Minnesota’s borders.

These insights from a major local business figure are not just a critique of past actions but a cautionary stance towards future governance at a higher level.
