Musk sounds alarm on Trump-backed spending bill, citing deficit danger

 May 28, 2025

Elon Musk has expressed his dissatisfaction with a recent fiscal decision taken by Republicans in Congress.

During an interview scheduled for broadcast on CBS Sunday Morning on June 1, Musk criticized the Trump-backed spending bill that managed to pass a vote in the House of Representatives, arguing that the measure runs counter to efforts to curb wasteful spending and fractious government administration, as CNBC reports.

Musk, who serves as the head of the advisory board for the Department of Government Efficiency, believes that the newly passed legislation undermines efforts for efficient governance. Specifically, he argued that the bill, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, would contribute significantly to the federal budget deficit.

Price of legislation spurs debate

The Congressional Budget Office has projected that this piece of legislation would raise the federal budget deficit by a daunting $3.8 trillion over the next decade. Meanwhile, the national debt currently stands at an already high $36.2 trillion, and the federal deficit is anticipated to approach $2 trillion within the year.

The Department of Government Efficiency, overseen by Musk, claims to have successfully saved approximately $170 billion in taxpayer funds since the beginning of the year. Their approach has involved targeting areas of government waste and redundancies, resulting in an impactful 275,000 job cuts within government payrolls.

Despite these efforts, Musk fears that the Republican spending measure disrupts the progress made. "I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill," Musk commented, pointing out the contradiction between reducing and increasing the budget deficit.

Musk's view on federal bureaucracy laid bare

Musk has voiced his concerns about federal inefficiencies, describing the administrative structure as more cumbersome than anticipated. He relayed these observations in an interview with the Washington Post, noting the overwhelming challenges his department has faced, describing it as "the whipping boy for everything."

As a frequent visitor to the White House since Trump's election, Musk has often been at the center of the government's fiscal reform efforts. However, the tech mogul plans to dial back his involvement with DOGE to refocus on his businesses, which include the well-known enterprises of X, Tesla, and SpaceX.

This decision follows Musk's expressed frustrations with what he regards as setbacks due to political decisions that seem focused elsewhere. The efficiency gains made by DOGE seemed diluted in the wake of the bill, providing Musk a poignant moment to consider his future priorities.

Political backdrop, future challenges converge

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will next face deliberations in the Senate, where it is expected to encounter substantial criticism. While President Trump and fellow Republicans argue that the bill will boost economic growth sufficiently to offset the tax cuts, it remains to be seen how the legislative process will unfold.

Trump's administration remains optimistic, postulating that the economic stimulation from the bill could potentially mitigate the increase in the deficit. Backers of the measure assert its potential to enhance growth despite opponents' concerns.

Musk encapsulated his skepticism by stating, "I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful, but I don’t know if it could be both." His comment reflects the dichotomy between the legislation's ambition and the pragmatic effects he foresees.

Balancing economic growth with fiscal responsibility

This scenario calls attention to broader discussions about balancing economic expansion with fiscal responsibility. With the interplay of tax cuts and government budgeting, the political landscape grapples with prioritizing short-term growth versus long-term financial health.

As conversations evolve, the focus may shift toward how effectively governmental policies can harmonize these interests. For Musk and fiscal conservatives, the emphasis remains on reducing government waste and tempering bureaucratic obstacles.

The future of Musk's involvement with governmental affairs may become more defined as he allocates his resources to his private ventures. Meanwhile, the discussions on this spending bill may set the stage for the next phases of U.S. fiscal policy.
