Nebraska Gov. To Undergo Surgery After Horse Riding Accident
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen is set for surgery after a severe horse-riding accident resulted in multiple injuries.
Pillen will soon undergo a rib fixation procedure at Nebraska Medicine following his serious injuries from the equestrian mishap, as the Washington Examiner reports.
This past Sunday, while riding with his family, Pillen was thrown from a horse, leading to severe injuries including seven broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, lacerations on his spleen and kidney, and a minor vertebrae fracture.
Nebraska's Leadership Temporarily Shifts
Due to the need for surgery, involving anesthesia and the installation of metal plates to stabilize his ribs, Pillen will temporarily step down from his duties.
Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly will serve as acting governor during Pillen's incapacitation and recovery.
The surgery is scheduled for Thursday at Nebraska Medicine, a facility known for its expertise in rib fixation operations.
At 68 years old, Pillen's active lifestyle and health profile deem him an ideal candidate for this surgical procedure.
Accident Details and Immediate Response
The governor was with his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter at the time of the accident.
Despite the severity of the incident, he managed to maintain a positive outlook, supported by immediate medical attention and his family's presence.
Following the surgery, Pillen is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days to recover, but he plans to continue working from his hospital bed during this period.
Support and Acknowledgments from the Governor's Office
Statements from the governor’s office praised the medical team at Nebraska Medicine.
"Based on the Governor’s health profile and active lifestyle, his doctors consider him an ideal candidate for this procedure. Nebraska Medicine has emerged as a national leader in rib fixation operations," one statement noted.
Another statement reflected on the support from the community.
"Gov. Pillen remains grateful for the exceptional care he is receiving by the team at Nebraska Medicine and thanks Nebraskans for their outpouring of support to him and his family during this time," it said.
Looking Forward: Governance and Recovery
The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of horse riding and has rallied support from Nebraskans and fellow politicians alike.
As Pillen prepares for his surgery and recovery, the state's leadership under Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly is anticipated to continue without interruption.
The governor's resolve to lead from his hospital bed highlights his commitment to his office and the people of Nebraska.
The upcoming days will be pivotal for both his recovery and the seamless governance of the state.
