New Jersey police sergeant, ex-mayor charged in child assault case
Brace yourself for a gut-wrenching story out of New Jersey that’ll make you question who is guarding the gate.
In a shocking turn of events, Andrew LaBruno, a Jersey City police sergeant and former Democrat mayor of Dumont, was arrested on Monday, accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a child he connected with via a social media platform, as Breitbart reports.
The allegations are as disturbing as they come, painting a picture of betrayal by someone entrusted with public safety.
Disturbing Details of the Alleged Crime
Investigators report that LaBruno traveled to the child’s home in Englewood, New Jersey, where the horrific incident unfolded.
According to the criminal complaint, he allegedly sprayed some unknown substance into his hand, then pressed it over the victim’s mouth and nose, leaving the child dizzy and vulnerable.
The complaint further claims that, with the victim rendered “physically helpless,” LaBruno carried out the sexual assault while they were alone in the home.
Emergency Response and Arrest
A 911 call brought police to the scene on Monday, where they found the child displaying clear signs of cognitive impairment.
The victim was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment, highlighting the immediate toll of this alleged crime.
Authorities, after reviewing LaBruno’s statements captured on body cameras, the victim’s account, and physical evidence, found sufficient cause to arrest him on the spot.
Charges and Immediate Consequences
LaBruno now faces serious charges, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Following his arrest, he was suspended without pay from the Jersey City Police Department, a swift move that underscores the gravity of the accusations.
Kim Wallace-Scalcione, press secretary for the Jersey City mayor’s office, confirmed, “LaBruno was suspended without pay immediately following his arrest.”
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Path Ahead
Wallace-Scalcione also noted that the Jersey City Police Department “will assist the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office as needed during its criminal investigation.”
Meanwhile, the department’s Internal Affairs unit is conducting a separate probe to determine LaBruno’s final employment status once all investigations wrap up.
As of now, LaBruno remains in custody without bail at Bergen County Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday, when more details may emerge about this deeply troubling case.
