New York federal judge assigned to Maduro trial dies at 92

A longtime New York federal judge set to oversee the criminal trial of deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has died at 92, forcing a random reassignment of the high-stakes narcoterrorism case.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein died Wednesday of natural causes just short of his 93rd birthday while still handling the prosecution of Maduro and his wife in Manhattan federal court.

Fox News reported that a new judge will be randomly assigned to the matter, which carries serious charges and a trial date in June 2027. The vacancy lands on a case that already drew national attention after Maduro was captured and brought to the United States earlier this year.

Chief Judge Laura Taylor Swain confirmed the death and issued a formal statement of appreciation for Hellerstein’s long service on the Southern District of New York bench.

"His energetic and dedicated service to this Court continued until his death. He is greatly appreciated and will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathies are with his family at this sad time."

Hellerstein had nearly three decades on the federal bench in New York City after then-President Clinton nominated him in 1998. Before that he served in the military justice branch of the U.S. Army and spent nearly three decades in private practice. He was a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia Law School.

Maduro appeared in his courtroom weeks earlier

The Hill reported that Maduro and his wife stood in Hellerstein’s courtroom less than two weeks before the judge’s death to enter not-guilty pleas on a new set of criminal charges. The deposed Venezuelan leader faces accusations that include narco-terrorism and related counts tied to drug trafficking and torture.

The New York Post noted that Hellerstein had recently cut off Maduro’s rambling remarks in court and entered the not-guilty plea on the defendant’s behalf. The case has now been randomly reassigned to U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres.

Hellerstein died Wednesday morning surrounded by family. The court described the cause as natural causes. Maduro’s defense team issued a brief statement of condolence after the news broke.

"We were saddened to learn of Judge Hellerstein’s passing and offer our condolences to his family."

High-profile docket stretched back decades

Breitbart reported that Hellerstein had been assigned the Maduro drug-trafficking matter since 2020 and later drew the newer torture-related charges against Maduro and Cilia Flores. Trial remains scheduled for June 2027 despite the change in judges.

The same jurist previously oversaw major Sept. 11-related federal lawsuits in New York City against the owners of the World Trade Center, the city, airlines, and airport security firms. He also rejected an eight-figure proposed settlement in a civil case involving disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein and women who accused him of sexual abuse.

Hellerstein agreed that Michael Cohen, once a close associate of President Trump, could be released from prison to home confinement. He also repeatedly denied efforts to move Trump’s New York hush-money criminal prosecution into federal court. Those rulings formed part of a long record of high-visibility decisions on the Manhattan bench.

Political and cultural pushback against the current administration has surfaced in other arenas as well, including celebrity talk of leaving the country over policy disagreements.

Case moves forward under new judge

Swain described Hellerstein as an insightful and dedicated lawyer who served with distinction for more than 25 years after a full career in private practice. The chief judge’s statement stressed that his work continued until the end.

"Judge Hellerstein was an insightful and dedicated lawyer who, following a distinguished career in the private sector, served with distinction for over 25 years as a distinguished jurist of this court."

Federal rules require random reassignment when a judge dies or leaves a pending case. Torres now inherits the Maduro prosecution, including the conspiracy and narcoterrorism counts against the former Venezuelan leader and his wife. Pre-trial proceedings will continue on the existing calendar unless the new judge orders otherwise.

Maduro was brought to the United States earlier this year on the trafficking and terrorism-related accusations. He and his wife have pleaded not guilty. The June 2027 trial date gives the new judge and both sides time to prepare, yet the sudden change still removes the jurist who had already managed early appearances and plea proceedings.

Hellerstein’s death closes a nearly 30-year tenure marked by complex civil and criminal matters that reached far beyond any single defendant. The Southern District of New York will keep the Maduro case on track under its successor judge while the court formally mourns a colleague who stayed active into his 90s.

Law-and-order cases against foreign officials accused of flooding America with drugs do not pause for personnel changes. The charges remain, the victims remain, and the demand for a full public trial remains exactly where it was the day before the judge died.
