NY AG Letitia James Issues Defiant Statement in Wake of Trump win

 November 7, 2024

In a press conference filled with defiance, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James declared their intentions to counter President-elect Donald Trump's policy agenda.

Hochul unveiled the "Empire State Freedom Initiative," a strategy designed to challenge any federal policies that could undermine state rights and regulation, as the New York Post reports.

Both Hochul and James conveyed a strong, unified stance against potential changes anticipated from the Trump administration.

The press conference was scheduled the day after Trump's election victory, signaling what they felt was urgency of their announcement.

As Hochul addressed the media, she articulated concerns about potential conflicts with the incoming administration across various domains, including abortion, labor, LGBTQ rights, environmental policy, and immigration.

Details of the Empire State Freedom Initiative

The focal point of Hochul’s announcement was the creation of the "Empire State Freedom Initiative." This initiative intends to protect New York's interests and to safeguard state rights from federal encroachments that may arise under Trump's leadership. Hochul stressed that any attempts to "harm New Yorkers or roll back their rights" would be met with resistance.

Attorney General James echoed Hochul's sentiments, assuring listeners that her office would be at the forefront of defending against any perceived regressions. She declared her readiness to collaborate with Hochul, as well as other state and local entities, to ensure the defense of American rights across the nation.

Hochul expressed particular concern over expected policy shifts, such as the likely repeal of the $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions.

She also urged the continuation of federal backing for critical infrastructure projects in New York, citing endeavors like the Second Avenue subway extension and the Hudson River tunnel reconstruction as priorities that should garner bipartisan support.

Republican Leaders Criticize Hochul and James

The conference did not go without criticism. Prominent Republican figures in New York viewed the session as divisive. Ed Cox criticized Hochul’s approach, characterizing it as irrational and unhelpful to New Yorkers.

Similarly, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik argued that Hochul holds the record for the lowest approval ratings for any New York governor, pointing to Trump’s comparative popularity in the state as justification for his administration's policies.

Stefanik further attributed Trump's electoral success in New York partly to what she described as politically motivated investigations by James's office, insinuating misuse of power in targeting political adversaries.

Former Congressman Lee Zeldin also weighed in, suggesting that Hochul's combative stance underscored partisan divisions rather than fostering post-election unity. He suggested that a more collaborative approach could benefit the broader political landscape.

Criticism of Hochul's Rhetoric and Approach

Critics, including Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, perceived Hochul's posture as unnecessarily adversarial. Blakeman argued that Hochul's defiance could exacerbate existing challenges in New York, urging a more conciliatory tone that acknowledges the electoral mandate of the new administration.

Amid these critiques, James remained resolute in her commitment to use every tool at her disposal to prevent any backsliding on rights.

Reassuring that her office was prepared for a Trump administration, James exuded confidence, emphasizing that she had never been intimidated by Trump and was determined to safeguard the progress made in recent years.

In conclusion, while the press conference underscored Hochul and James's resolute opposition to the upcoming administration, it also highlighted the stark partisan divide in New York.

As Trump prepares to take office, the state leaders’ aggressive stance serves as an early indication of the challenges and potential clashes that lay ahead. Whether this leads to meaningful dialogue or entrenched conflict remains to be seen as the nation braces for this pivotal political transition.
