New York politician accused of directing funds to husband's organizations
Brooklyn Councilwoman Shahana Hanif faces allegations of directing substantial amounts of taxpayer money to organizations connected to her husband, Abdullah Younus.
There are increasing concerns about the Democrat's potential conflicts of interest involving the distribution of city funds to nonprofits associated with Hanif's husband, as the New York Post reports.
Hanif has come under scrutiny for reportedly funneling over $149,000 in taxpayer money towards Arab immigrant groups linked to Abdullah Younus.
Utilizing discretionary funding, Hanif allocated financial support to several nonprofits, including the Arab American Association of New York, The Arab American Family Support Center, and the New York Immigration Coalition.
Concerns Over Financial Patterns Emerge
Public records reveal a pattern in Hanif's funding allocations that raise suspicions. The funds were reportedly adjusted in accordance with her husband's participation in these groups.
In particular, a notable change occurred in 2024 when Younus joined The Arab American Family Support Center's board. Following this appointment, Hanif increased the funding to the organization by $15,000, bringing the total to $35,000.
In the subsequent fiscal year of 2025, this funding saw an additional raise, culminating in a total of $50,000. A contrasting action was observed in 2022 when funding to the Arab American Association decreased after Younus transitioned from its board to the Family Support Center.
This led to accusations that neither Hanif nor the benefited organizations disclosed potential conflicts of interest to the New York City Council.
Public Reaction and Criticism Pours in
Christine Doyle, a constituent, publicly criticized Hanif, citing her spending as suspicious. "She was completely inaccessible," Doyle said, describing Hanif's alleged lack of responsiveness and attitude towards constituents.
“It’s like now we’re married, this organization is going to get 50,000 dollars,” she added, reflecting her perception of the relationship between personal ties and fund allocations.
Doyle's grievances extended beyond financial dealings, as she also criticized Hanif's accessibility and demeanor. Describing Hanif's past actions, Doyle said, “You don’t do that -- and if you do, you tell people you’re doing it.” Doyle further reminisced about the councilwoman's earlier days, stating, “I liked her better when she was single in Gowanus with a cat.”
Previous Controversies and Allegations Resurface
Hanif has been a controversial figure in neighborhoods with significant Jewish populations, particularly due to her anti-Israel remarks and voting against initiatives like “End Jewish Hatred Day.” In 2023, Hanif was arrested during a rally where anti-Israel slogans were chanted. These actions have only added to the controversy surrounding her.
In response to the allegations, Hanif firmly defended her decisions and funding allocations. "Before every budget vote, I’ve consulted directly with the Office of the General Counsel to ensure full compliance with disclosure requirements," she stated, emphasizing her adherence to regulations.
Supporters of Hanif's funding decisions argue that the nonprofits receiving the funds provide vital services to the district. Hanif herself asserted, “Organizations like the New York Immigration Coalition, Arab American Association of New York, and the Arab American Family Support Center provide critical services to my district.” She continues to support them despite criticisms, associating her stance with broader political commitments.
Political Implications and Responses Unfold
Hanif's actions have spotlighted the larger issues of transparency and accountability in city council operations. Some constituents and critics assert that the way discretionary funds are managed requires greater scrutiny to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
While Hanif remains steadfast in her defense, arguing that the organizations in question stand against policies by high-profile figures like the mayor and former president, others are not convinced.
“Clearly, some have a problem with that, but I’m proud to stand by this work,” Hanif remarked, encapsulating her perspective amid ongoing debates.
The controversies surrounding Hanif continue to unfold as her detractors call for more diligent oversight of council members' financial decisions. Her political future and the reputation of the involved organizations hang in the balance as the situation develops further.
