Obama Withholds Endorsement After Harris Becomes Presumptive Dem Nominee

 July 24, 2024

In a surprising turn of events, former President Barack Obama has refrained from endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee following Joe Biden’s announcement to withdraw from the presidential race.

Despite strong enthusiasm for Harris within his party's ranks, Obama hinted instead at the possibility of an open primary to select the Democratic nominee, rather than immediately offering her his support, as National Review reports.

Obama Comments on Biden's Withdrawal

On Sunday, Biden officially declared his withdrawal from the upcoming presidential race, prompting reactions from Democratic leaders. Former President Obama lauded Biden’s decision as an act of genuine public service.

“It’s a testament to Joe Biden’s love of country -- and a historic example of a genuine public servant once again putting the interests of the American people ahead of his own that future generations of leaders will do well to follow,” Obama noted.

This decision led many members of the Democratic Party to rally around Harris, viewing her as the most logical successor to Biden. However, Obama's comments suggested he might prefer an open primary rather than an immediate endorsement of Harris.

Endorsements Pour in for Harris

In contrast to Obama’s reserved stance, President Biden publicly endorsed Harris, declaring his "full support" for her candidacy. He expressed confidence in Harris’s leadership and vision for America's future.

Significant endorsements came from other influential Democrats as well.

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton added their voices, stating, “We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom also joined the chorus of endorsements, bolstering Harris's position as the presumptive nominee.

Democratic National Convention to Manage Process

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) chairman Jamie Harrison emphasized the importance of a fair and organized process to determine the party’s nominee. Harrison assured party members that the process would be conducted transparently.

“In the coming days, the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to move forward as a united Democratic Party with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November," Harrison said.

He further detailed that the selection process will adhere to established party rules and procedures, ensuring that delegates fulfill their responsibilities with due diligence.

“Our delegates are prepared to take seriously their responsibility in swiftly delivering a candidate to the American people,” Harrison emphasized.

Obama Emphasizes Unity and Vision

While Obama refrained from endorsing Harris explicitly, he articulated his belief in Biden’s capabilities and the overall vision for the country. “I believe that Joe Biden’s vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August,” he said.

Obama expressed optimism about the forthcoming Democratic National Convention, suggesting that it would showcase the nation's prospects. He underscored the importance of unity and the collective responsibility among Democrats to forward Biden's message of hope in the upcoming elections.

“And I expect that every single one of us are prepared to carry that message of hope and progress forward into November and beyond,” Obama commented.

Potential Challengers in the Democratic Field

While Harris continues to receive substantial endorsements, Obama's suggestion of an open primary opens the floor for other potential contenders within the Democratic Party. The idea of an open primary might attract other Democratic figures to submit their candidacy, possibly aiming for a broader range of ideas and leadership styles.

This decision could lead to spirited debates and a more comprehensive vetting process of potential nominees, ensuring that the chosen candidate has wide-ranging support across the party.
