Obama Supports Biden's Exit, Holds Back on Harris Endorsement

 July 22, 2024

Former President Barack Obama has expressed his support for President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Obama, while supporting Biden's decision, emphasized the importance of a thorough selection process for the Democratic nominee, and refrained from joining what seemed to many an instant coronation of Kamala Harris, as the Washington Examiner reports.

In a significant turn of events on Sunday, Biden announced his decision to exit the 2024 race. This announcement has set off a ripple of endorsement and reactions within the Democratic Party.

Biden Endorses Harris Following Withdrawal

Approximately 30 minutes after his announcement, Biden endorsed Harris as his successor. This endorsement came with the promise of Harris inheriting Biden's nearly $100 million campaign war chest.

Biden's decision was quickly met with support from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, both of whom also endorsed Harris. Their endorsement set the stage for Harris to potentially take over Biden's campaign momentum.

Obama, however, took a different approach. He refrained from directly endorsing Harris.

Obama Calls For Thorough Selection Process

Obama released a statement emphasizing the need for a thorough and well-structured process to select the next Democratic nominee. He expressed confidence in the Democratic Party's leadership to ensure a qualified candidate emerges from this process.

"We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead," Obama stated. "But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges."

While Obama highlighted Biden's vision and accomplishments, he made it clear that it was crucial to follow due process in selecting a new party leader.

Biden's Vision Praised By Obama

Obama praised Biden's vision for America, highlighting his achievements as President. "I believe that Joe Biden’s vision of a generous, prosperous, and united America that provides opportunity for everyone will be on full display at the Democratic Convention in August," Obama remarked.

He added, "I expect that every single one of us are prepared to carry that message of hope and progress forward into November and beyond."

Despite his heightened admiration for Biden’s track record, Obama acknowledged the rightfulness of Biden’s decision to step away.

Harris Gains Support Amid Biden's Departure

Harris has been aligning herself closely with President Biden's record in recent days. This strategic move positions her as a strong contender to carry forth the accomplishments of the current administration.

With Biden's endorsement and the support of the Clintons, Harris' candidacy is gaining significant traction. A prominent Democratic campaign operative emphasized Harris’ practical advantages.

"Vice President Harris is the obvious choice to replace President Biden and not just because of the $100 million war chest she’d stand to inherit," the operative highlighted.

"She’s able to go around the country and connect with voters and remind them of everything this administration has done over the past four years," they added.

Obama's Strategic Ambiguity On Harris

Despite the endorsements from notable figures within the party, Obama’s careful approach signals strategic ambiguity. This stance opens the door for potential candidates to emerge through the envisioned selection process, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation.

Obama’s emphasis on a structured nomination process underscores the importance of democratic principles within the party’s framework.

This sentiment resonates with many within the party who advocate for an inclusive and transparent selection process.
