Biographer Obamas Concerned About Legacy Amid Role in Harris Defeat

 November 10, 2024

David Garrow, biographer of Barack Obama, has recently criticized both the former president and his wife Michelle for what he describes as "tone-deaf" language that he believes negatively impacted Kamala Harris' campaign.

Garrow claims that the Obamas' campaign rhetoric alienated crucial voter demographics, particularly Black men, which contributed to Harris' campaign challenges and could tarnish the former president's legacy, as the Daily Mail reports.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning author known for his comprehensive 2017 biography Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, Garrow suggests that the Obamas' approach was perceived as patronizing by many voters.

He argues that this misstep not only harmed Harris' chances but also threatens to reduce the former president's political influence to that of Bill Clinton's largely ceremonial role within the Democratic Party.

Allegations of Diminished Political Relevance

According to Garrow, Barack Obama is becoming increasingly concerned about his historical legacy, particularly in light of former President Donald Trump's political successes.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), a significant part of Obama's legacy, faced threats when Trump attempted to dismantle it through an executive order in 2017. However, Trump's efforts to repeal it through congressional action were unsuccessful, preserving a key component of Obama's presidential achievements.

During the political campaign period, Trump criticized the ACA, calling it "lousy," yet later denied intentions to repeal it. These developments have added to Obama's concerns, with his legacy under scrutiny while the Democratic Party signals a shift toward new leadership, potentially sidelining figures from past administrations.

Criticism of Obama's Comments During Campaign

Barack Obama's remarks to a group in Pennsylvania on Oct. 11 were viewed as controversial. He implied that Black men might be uncomfortable with a female president, which Garrow believes was particularly damaging. This sentiment, considered alienating, may have hindered Harris' connection with these critical voting constituents.

During her campaign trail, Michelle Obama also delivered politically charged comments critical of Trump's stance on social issues, notably abortion.

These speeches were aimed at dissuading men from supporting Trump, underscoring a bitter political climate and the challenges faced by those navigating it.

Garrow's Insight on Future Democratic Directions

Garrow predicts that future Democratic strategies will likely distance from the Obamas and other high-profile figures like Hillary Clinton.

He suggests that the party will embrace a newer generation of leaders, moving away from those previously at the helm. Despite these predictions, Barack Obama remains a sought-after speaker, commanding substantial fees for his engagements, exemplified by a $400,000 speech in 2017.

The Obamas have diversified their interests in the wake of their time in the White House with ventures into entertainment through Higher Ground Productions. Their company has produced acclaimed content, including Leave the World Behind and Crip Camp, broadening their influence beyond politics.

Michelle Obama's Business Endeavors

In addition to their media involvement, Michelle Obama has pursued business endeavors, including promoting the healthy fruit drink PLEZi. She made a notable appearance in Livermore, California, surprising Costco shoppers in September 2024 as part of a promotional effort.

David Garrow dismisses rumors of Barack Obama's involvement in President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, attributing the influence to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi instead. This further highlights Garrow's perception of Obama's waning influence in current political dynamics.

Reflections on the Impact of Campaign Rhetoric

Analyzing Barack and Michelle Obama's approaches during the campaign period, Garrow says voters preferred honest dialogue rather than condescension. He stresses that their perceived arrogance may have significantly contributed to Harris' campaign difficulties, ultimately alienating key demographics crucial for Democratic Party success.

The Obamas' real estate portfolio, which includes properties in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Martha's Vineyard, and Hawaii, reflects their continued prosperity and influence beyond direct political roles. Meanwhile, Garrow himself, residing in Pennsylvania -- a pivotal state during the presidential campaign -- offers a perspective rooted in understanding electoral shifts and voter expectations.

Garrow articulates a need for the Democrats to evolve strategically, emphasizing nurturing newer leaders who can resonate across the political spectrum. His commentary signifies an introspective moment within the Democratic Party as it prepares to face future electoral challenges without the anchorage of past giants.
