Ohio couple and their kids have been found dead in an apparent murder-suicide

 August 26, 2023

An Ohio couple and their three children have been found dead in their home in an apparent murder-suicide.

The tragic incident unfolded in Uniontown, Ohio, where a well-respected accountant, her businessman husband, and their kids were found dead in the family home, the Daily Mail reported.

Details of the family

The victims have been identified as Jason Dunham, 46, Melissa Dunham, 42, and their children Renee, 15, Amber, 12, and Evan, 9.

The family was found on Carnation Avenue Northwest on Thursday evening, all having died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The incident is believed to be a result of a "domestic dispute turned deadly," according to Harry Campbell, chief investigator of the Stark County Coroner's Office, although it remains unclear who was responsible for the killings.

The police in Stark County found the deceased while performing a welfare check at the Dunham's address and pronounced them dead at 9:52 pm.

Community in shock

Neighbors expressed their shock and sadness at the news. Edmond Gazdacko, a neighbor, mentioned that the Dunham children often played with his grandchildren when they came to visit.

He and his wife, Denise, never had any issues with the Dunhams and described Melissa as a wonderful mother.

Melissa Dunham was a partner at the accounting firm Bober Markey Fedorovich & Co in Fairlawn, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She held a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Westminster College, an MBA from Kent State University, and a Master of Taxation from The University of Akron.

Her accolades included the Woman of Professional Excellence award presented by the Women’s Network and the 30 For the Future Award from the Greater Akron Chamber.

Devastation among colleagues

Colleagues of Melissa Dunham were devastated by the news.

Elizabeth Bartz, CEO of Akron-based State and Federal Communications, had known Melissa for more than 10 years and described her as a great Girl Scouts mom.

Bartz said:

She would always have her daughters send me their cookie order forms. They would deliver them in person and write me thank you notes.

Lake County Local school district superintendent Kevin Tobin confirmed that all three children were students in the school district. Tobin stated:

We alerted our parents and our staff. We have counselors and others meeting (with students) as we speak. We are working through this as calm and compassionate as we can.

Investigation underway

The Uniontown Police Department, along with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Stark County Prosecutor's Office, is investigating the incident.

No one else is believed to have been involved. Renee was heavily involved in the school band, which was expected to attend an away football game on Friday night. Tobin noted:

This is going to impact them. They are a family, and it is almost two years to the day when we lost another band student after surgery. It's a very, very tragic incident, and we will just rally as a school community and as Lake Local community.

The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome.
