Ohio whistleblower exposes major Medicaid fraud in Somali community
Brace yourself for a staggering scandal as an Ohio whistleblower uncovers a massive Medicaid fraud scheme draining taxpayer dollars for over a decade.
A shocking revelation from Ohio attorney and conservative commentator Mehek Cooke details a long-running operation allegedly exploiting weaknesses in the state’s Medicaid system, with millions in public funds diverted through fraudulent home healthcare claims, as Fox News reports.
Cooke has stepped forward with serious allegations of systemic abuse within segments of the Somali community in Ohio, focusing on a scheme that mirrors Minnesota’s social services fraud scandal.
Uncovering a Decade-Long Fraud Scheme
Her claims suggest this fraud has persisted for more than 10 years, taking advantage of Ohio’s Medicaid program with little oversight.
The scheme allegedly involves doctors approving payments -- up to $91,000 per person each year -- for home healthcare to family members based on fake or exaggerated medical conditions.
These doctors, Cooke asserts, are enticed with kickbacks for signing off on claims without verifying their legitimacy.
Exploiting Loopholes with Clever Tactics
Cooke points out that Ohio’s Medicaid waiver system, intended to aid those truly in need, lacks critical safeguards like independent assessments or unannounced visits.
“Our waiver system in Ohio was built with compassion. It’s being looted today,” Cooke stated, stressing that the problem lies with specific bad actors, not the broader community.
Providers claim a staggering 99% of recipients are coached to deceive doctors and don’t qualify for the benefits they receive.
Social Media Contradictions Raise Eyebrows
Even more galling, some beneficiaries listed as bedridden are spotted on social media living active lives, partying or dancing without a care.
“They're just rubberstamping a lot of these. And then that same individual, a week later, that's supposed to be bedridden, is all over social media,” Cooke noted, exposing the blatant mismatch between claims and reality.
It’s a bitter pill for Ohio taxpayers who fund a program now seemingly overrun by deception.
Whistleblowers Face Grave Risks
Providers within the community, risking severe retaliation, have confided in Cooke about being pressured into this sprawling fraud network.
Their bravery in speaking out reveals a system Cooke calls one of the easiest in the Midwest to exploit, a policy failure that demands urgent attention.
While some might try to spin this as a cultural attack, the true scandal is how criminals manipulate flawed rules, leaving honest citizens to bear the cost.
