Oklahoma father flees car crash, leaving wife, injured kids, dying teen daughter at scene

 January 19, 2024

An Oklahoma father is accused of fleeing a car accident, leaving behind his injured family, including a daughter who later passed away due to her injuries.

In a harrowing incident last week, Elliott Binney, 41, allegedly fled the scene of the aforementioned car crash, abandoning his wife and children. The family SUV collided with a street sign, resulting in a rollover crash.

Binney's 16-year-old daughter, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead in the hospital, as FOX News reported.

Details of the tragic rollover crash emerge

The Bixby Police Department reported to the crash site around 9:20 p.m. on Jan. 11.

Upon arrival, they found Binney's wife and their two elementary school-aged children injured and transported them to a hospital. Binney was not at the scene when the authorities arrived.

According to the police, Shelby Binney, the 16-year-old, was thrown from the SUV upon impact because she was not wearing a seatbelt. Despite immediate medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries in the hospital later that evening.

Allegations of alcohol and heated argument prior to crash

Binney's wife informed the police that they had been involved in a heated argument just before the crash.

The investigation further revealed a bottle of vodka and several unlabeled pill bottles in Binney's car, suggesting possible substance use before the accident.

Although Binney claimed an oil slick caused the crash, his blood alcohol content could not be tested due to the delay in his apprehension.

Manhunt and arrest of Elliott Binney

The police launched a manhunt following Binney's escape from the crash site.

They traced him to Checotah, about 50 miles from the scene, the next morning. Binney had fled on foot before obtaining a second vehicle from a family-owned business, which the police tracked down electronically.

When arrested, authorities found similar items in the pickup truck, including a handle of vodka and pill bottles with their labels ripped off.

Witnesses provided additional context, stating they saw Binney acting disoriented by the crashed SUV. When approached by a witness, Binney reportedly ran away. Furthermore, witnesses observed him driving recklessly, at speeds around 70 mph and illegally passing cars prior to the crash.

Binney's troubled history with the law

Elliott Binney faces serious charges including leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, first-degree manslaughter, and passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone.

He was released from Tulsa County Jail after posting a $102,100 bond. Records reveal Binney has a history of reckless driving, previous DUIs, and charges for leaving the scene of an accident.

Besides his driving-related offenses, Binney has past convictions for larceny from a retailer and assault with a dangerous weapon dating back to 2002. This pattern of behavior paints a concerning picture of the individual involved in this tragic incident.

Community mourns the loss of Shelby Binney

Shelby Binney, a sophomore and cheerleader at Bixby High School, was remembered as a bright light in the community.

Her cheerleading gym paid tribute to her, describing her as having a heart of gold. The tragedy has deeply affected the community, with her parents sharing memorial photos on their Facebook profiles, highlighting the profound loss of a young life.
