Pence Calls For Republican Unity In Ukraine To Challenge China And Russia

 September 4, 2024

In a compelling call to action, former Vice President Mike Pence has urgently urged GOP members to consolidate their support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, Fox News reported.

Pence's plea intends to align the Republican Party toward a unified stance supporting Ukraine, opposing factions pushing to end U.S. involvement.

Amidst internal disagreement within the Republican Party regarding U.S. foreign aid, Pence emphasizes the wider global stakes involved, particularly highlighting China’s involvement alongside Russia. His nonprofit, Advancing American Freedoms, has outlined these views in a recently published memo.

Key GOP Figures Split On Ukraine Aid

The debate over the continuation of U.S. support for Ukraine has divided GOP ranks prominently between the Senate and the House. While notable Senate Republicans like Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell are in favor of supporting Ukraine, a significant faction within the House opposes further aid, concerned with national spending and other domestic issues.

This division has resulted in delays in the U.S. aid dispatch to Ukraine, crucially affecting its military capabilities during critical times of the year.

Election Prospects Tied to Foreign Policy Stance

The internal conflict over Ukraine could significantly influence the Republican party's fortunes in the upcoming November elections. Pence argues that steadfast support for Ukraine transcends immediate political gains and addresses broader security implications for the U.S., particularly in its strategic rivalry with China.

The memo from Advancing American Freedoms makes a detailed case that China’s support of Russia in the Ukraine invasion amplifies the threat to global democracy and U.S. interests.

Financial Concerns Versus Strategic Imperatives

Critics within the GOP have raised alarms about the escalating national debt and other financial commitments, including border security. However, Pence’s organization advocates that these issues are more about political will than actual budgetary constraints.

The memo also argues that the financial aid to Ukraine, amounting to just 1.5% of the overall federal budget, is a worthwhile expenditure given the potential costs of inaction, notably if Russia were to threaten a NATO ally.

"While there’s no question that the federal government has a massive overspending problem, lethal aid to Ukraine has been worth every penny," states the memo, drawing attention to the disproportionally larger costs of potential military engagements under NATO treaties.

Pence Highlights Risks Of Reduced Aid

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Pence emphasized that the downfall of Ukraine would materially diminish U.S. security, emboldening authoritarian regimes worldwide, from Beijing to Tehran. "A more powerful Russia will only encourage China to be more aggressive," Pence commented, underscoring the interlinked global security dynamics and the potential risks of reduced aid.

"Defeating Russia hamstrings China. Russian control over Ukraine would provide China with more oil and natural gas, further fueling China’s expansionist ambitions," detailed the organization's memo, illustrating the geopolitical ripple effects of the current conflict.

Should U.S. aid falter, the strategic cost, according to Pence, could be immense. "The Biden-Harris administration has failed America at home and abroad, so it is small wonder there are skeptics of continuing aid to Ukraine. But the simple fact is America will be less secure if Ukraine falls," he added.

Advocating For Continued Support Amidst GOP Divisions

By advocating for sustained and robust support for Ukraine, Pence and his nonprofit seek to bridge the divides within the GOP, suggesting a unified stance against global authoritarian threats. This stance is not just about aiding Ukraine but safeguarding broader U.S. and allied interests in an increasingly turbulent global arena.
