Phil Collins Reflects on Music Career, Health Struggles in New Documentary
Phil Collins, the iconic drummer of Genesis, has officially retired, capping off an illustrious career in music that has left an indelible mark on the rock world.
The physical challenges from decades of drumming have compelled Collins to step away from live performances, a reality poignantly captured in the new documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, as Fox News reports.
Collins began his drumming career in the late 1960s and quickly rose to fame as a key member of Genesis, joining the band in 1970. Over the years, his drumming became synonymous with the group's success.
Genesis And Collins: A Musical Journey Begins
His journey with Genesis was marked by constant touring and recording, during which he made significant contributions to the band's sound and success.
The toll of this intensive career became increasingly evident. Collins has suffered from severe back issues and a condition known as "drop foot," which affects his mobility and has been attributed to his drumming posture.
Despite these challenges, he continued to perform until the physical repercussions became too severe. In 2009, he disclosed that his vertebrae were crushing his spinal cord, a direct result of years spent drumming.
Documenting Struggles of Rock Legend
These health issues were highlighted in the documentary filmed in late 2022, where Collins reflects on his career and the physical sacrifices it entailed. He received his first drum at just three years old, indicating a lifelong passion for music.
"The drumming has taken a toll on my hands, legs," Collins revealed in the documentary, underscoring the severity of his condition. He even resorted to taping drumsticks to his hands to continue playing.
His son, Nic Collins, commented on the seemingly invincible persona drummers from the '70s and '80s, like his father, often embodied. "You’re a drummer, you're invincible, you just do what you do," he said, acknowledging the delayed realization of the long-term consequences.
Phil Collins Bids Farewell to Live Performances
Phil Collins's last live performance took place on March 26, 2022, at the O2 arena in London, a poignant moment for him and his fans.
"Tonight is a very special night... It's the last show for Genesis," he announced during the concert.
The event marked the end of Genesis's tour, and for Collins, the end of his time on stage.
"I guess after tonight we've all got to get real jobs," he joked, highlighting the bittersweet nature of the farewell.
Leland Sklar, a fellow musician and collaborator, expressed a nostalgic hope for one more performance, reflecting the sentiment of many who have admired Collins's work over the decades.
Legacy of a Drumming Icon
Despite the end of his performing career, Collins's impact on music remains profound.
"If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything," he stated, emphasizing his decision to prioritize his health over continuing to perform at a lesser capacity.
"I just feel like I've used up my air miles," Collins remarked metaphorically about his career, suggesting a reflective look back at the extensive demands placed on his body over years of relentless performing.
"It's still kind of sinking in a bit," Collins admitted about his retirement. "I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock," he concluded, capturing the emotional weight of concluding a lifelong passion and profession.
