Pollster Discusses Supreme Court's Future as GOP takes WH, Senate

 November 7, 2024

Republican pollster Frank Luntz recently shared his insights on the possible repercussions of Donald Trump's re-election on the U.S. Supreme Court.

With the Senate now returning to GOP control and amid a Trump presidential victory, Luntz believes that the impact on the nation's highest court could be significant, as The Hill reports.

During a televised segment on NewsNation this Tuesday, Luntz outlined the judicial and political landscape that could emerge from the 2024 presidential election.

He emphasized the likelihood of a Republican-controlled Senate confirming any Trump nominee to the Supreme Court.

Luntz Warns of Judicial Shifts

Luntz highlighted that several Supreme Court justices are considered close to retirement, though he did not specify which ones.

The implications of potential Trump appointments became evident when Decision Desk HQ declared Trump the victor of the election early Wednesday morning, following a decisive win in Pennsylvania.

Trump's Previous Appointments and Their Impact

Throughout his first term, Trump's appointments to the Supreme Court included Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett.

These appointments have already profoundly affected U.S. law, most notably with the reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

"The Supreme Court, with the Senate going red and with Trump at this point more than likely to be elected, still not a sure thing, but if he gets elected then he gets the appointment and with the Senate going Republican whomever he wants is going to end up on the Supreme Court," Luntz stated during his appearance.

Implications for Trump's Policy Implementation

Luntz argued that having a Senate majority would streamline the implementation of Trump's policy agenda, including economic measures and tariffs, some of which might bypass Congress altogether.

"If he has the Senate, it becomes easier for him to put forward his economic policies and some of it doesn’t even require a vote of Congress, but if you’re looking for that, that tariff policy is more likely than not to come into play," he explained.

On election night, the Republican Party's success extended beyond the presidential race, securing a Senate majority with wins in key states.

Gov. Jim Justice clinched a seat in West Virginia, and Bernie Moreno triumphed in Ohio, defeating incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown.

The Changing Landscape of U.S. Politics

"That is about as big of an impact as you can have this election evening because there are a couple of justices that will probably be retiring in the next year or two," Luntz added, emphasizing the long-term effects Trump's potential second term could have on the judicial system.

The configuration of the Supreme Court is crucial as it not only interprets the law but also has the power to reshape significant aspects of American life. With Trump's appointments potentially tilting the Court even more to the right, the stakes in this election were incredibly high.

Senate Control Crucial for Trump's Judicial Agenda

As the political dust settles, the focus will shift to Trump's moves regarding the Supreme Court. If past actions are any indication, his selections could provoke significant legal and societal changes.

Analysts like Luntz see this as a pivotal moment for the U.S., one that could define the judicial landscape for decades to come.

The unfolding developments in the Supreme Court will undoubtedly be watched closely by both supporters and critics of the Trump administration, as each appointment has the potential to alter the balance of the highest court in the land.
