President Joe Biden Celebrates 235 Judicial Confirmations As Term Nears End
History was made when President Joe Biden triumphantly announced the confirmation of 235 federal judges during his term in office.
In a historic feat, Biden surpassed previous records while claiming to shore up the nation's democratic institutions against possible challenges from the forthcoming Trump administration, as The Hill reports.
During a recent public event, Biden, joined by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin, affirmed his commitment to bolstering democracy, underscored by a robust and trusted judiciary.
Biden's Historic Judicial Appointments Pace
Highlighting the depth and diversity of new members of the judiciary installed on his watch, Biden shared the composition of his additions.
His team consists of one Supreme Court Justice, 45 appeals court judges, 187 district court judges, and 2 judges on the Court of International Trade.
Among the most significant achievements during his tenure was the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court.
This development elevated Jackson to become the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, a testament to Biden's dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion.
In his address, Biden expressed pride in his judicial picks, stating, "I’m proud of the legacy that we’ll leave for our nation as it relates to judges."
"Shaping Everyday Lives"
Biden did not censor himself while critiquing controversial Supreme Court rulings, including decisions on Roe v. Wade, affirmative action, and presidential immunity.
“Shaping everyday lives of Americans, protecting our basic freedoms -- I never thought we’d be talking about this -- defending constitutional liberties. Respecting the idea [of] precedent matters,” asserted Biden. Biden's judge choices are aimed at "reestablishing the safeguards that are built into the Constitution," he added.
Biden affirmed the fundamental role of judges as the guardians of democracy, protecting it from what he said were potential risks.
Biden's Tally Casts Shadow on Trump's Record
The previous term saw former president Trump confirming 234 judges, ushering in a conservative majority, along with three Supreme Court justices.
However, Biden's innovative nomination strategy tipped the balance, surpassing Trump's number by a single seat.
Moving away from a conservative tilt, Biden's judicial selection has crafted a formidable line of strategic defense against what he said were potentially anti-democratic forces.
Agreeing with Biden's sentiment, Schumer stated, “The good news is that these judges will be a barrier against attacks on our democratic institutions.”
Steering Democracy Forward
Embarking upon this landmark journey was not always easy for Biden. The Senate was evenly split with a 50-50 draw during the first half of Biden's term, tilting in favor of Democrats with a 51-49 count during the latter half, resulting in intense bi-partisan discussions underlying judiciary decisions.
The confirmation of 235 judges under President Biden's tenure marks a monumental benchmark in U.S. judiciary history.
With these choices made for the purpose of upholding the Constitution, Biden believes the nation is better equipped to face the tumultuous political cyclones he says could be brewing on the horizon.
