Putin cancer rumors noted in leaked classified docs

 April 15, 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin is receiving cancer treatments, according to a rumor found in a leaked U.S. military intelligence document.

The documents, leaked last week, including a number of foreign security details involving Russia and its invasion of Ukraine.

Impacting the conflict

"Along with detailed information about troop movements and losses on both sides fighting in Ukraine, the trove also contains daily intelligence briefings - a collection of short updates from a variety of sources from around the world," the Daily Mail reported.

"One of these briefings, the leaks appear to show, contained a rumour that said that Russia's top general is conspiring to 'throw' (deliberately lose) the war in Ukraine while Putin is undergoing chemotherapy treatment," it added.

Document details

"A document like this illuminates what intelligence can look like when it's put on the page, and the types of information that U.S. leaders are using in part to help them make their decisions. Every document contains a string of letters that serves as a shorthand explaining how the document was collected and who it’s for. The string at the top of the note about Russia 'throwing the war' is (TS//SI//REL TO USA, FVEY/FISA)," Vice reported alongside a screenshot of the text.

"This means this document is top secret (its security classification), collected by monitoring communications (SI), is releasable to people with a top secret security clearance  in the USA or other “Five Eyes” countries, and was collected under the guidance of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which sets the legal parameters for spying," it continued.

Planned sabotage?

"Russia planned to divert resources from Taganrog, Russia to Mariupol, Ukraine and focus its attention on the southern front," the document read, according to Sky News.

"According to [redacted] source, the plan for "the offensive" (no further information) was suspected to be a strategy devised by [Mr Gerasimov and Mr Patrushev] to sabotage Putin," it noted.

Meanwhile, the individual alleged as responsible for leaking the documents was arrested on Thursday.

Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, reportedly disclosed the information on a Discord group.

He was taken into custody by the FBI from his home in Dighton, MA.

The leak may have shared many details about the nation's foreign policy operations but one of the most intriguing has been the report on Putin's cancer treatments.

If accurate, the intelligence could show that America's military is waiting out the Russian leader as part of its long-term plan to declare victory in Ukraine.
