Rep. Lauren Boebert divorcing her husband of 18 years

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO-03) announced Tuesday that she has initiated divorce proceedings after 18 years of marriage to husband Jayson, with whom she shares four children, as the New York Post reports.

The pair wed back in 2005, and in the wake of her decision to file for dissolution of the marriage, Boebert has requested that her loved ones' privacy be respected as they navigate their new reality.

Boebert Announces Divorce

The congresswoman's news came in the form of a statement in which she said, “It is with a heavy weight on my heart that I have filed for divorce from my husband. I am grateful for our years of marriage together and for our beautiful children, all of whom deserve privacy and love as we work through this process.”

Boebert continued, “I've always been faithful in my marriage, and I believe strongly in marriage, which makes this announcement that much more difficult.”

Other than noting, “[t]his is truly about irreconcilable differences,” the outspoken lawmaker offered scant specifics about what may have prompted the split.

Indicating her intention to provide no additional comment on the matter “out of respect for our children,” Boebert vowed that she would “continue to work hard to represent the people of Colorado's 3rd Congressional District.”

“A Very Sad Thing”

Commenting briefly on his wife's filing, Jayson, 42, told the Daily Mail, “I am torn by this [it is] a very sad thing. A horrible moment in my life.”

Suggesting that he had no salacious gossip to share, he added, “I love her too much to say anything bad about her. She is the mother of my children and my partner for the last 20 years.”

“Please just let me have some peace,” the legislator's soon-to-be-ex-husband concluded.

Any degree of peace he receives may be short-lived, however, in that a court date has already been set for May 31 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Revealing Affidavit Emerges

Citing an affidavit obtained by the Daily Beast, the Post reported separately that the process server tasked with delivering divorce documents to Jayson indicated that the congresswoman's spouse grew “extremely angry” once he understood the nature of the paperwork.

“He started yelling and using profanities and told me that I was trespassing, and that he was calling the Sheriff's Office,” the process server said.

Providing further details, the process server added, “I told him I was leaving the documents on the chair outside of the door, he closed the door then let the dogs out.”

The individual also asserted that Jayson could be seen drinking a beer as well as “cleaning his gun” at the time of the delivery, though the congresswoman's husband denied both allegations, later saying, “I did not know what I was being served for or if it was some crazy left-wing person coming to my house again. I was not drinking, and I was not cleaning any gun.”

Family in Transition

The impending divorce of Lauren and Jayson is not the only major Boebert family development to take place this year, as the lawmaker revealed in March that she was weeks away from becoming a grandmother at the young age of 36, as the Denver Post noted at the time.

Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland, Boebert proudly declared, “I'm going to tell you all for the first time in a public setting that, not only am I a mother of four boys, but come April, I will be a Gigi to a brand-new grandson,” referencing the impending birth of a child to her unmarried, 17-year-old son, Tyler, and his partner.

Lauding the “rural conservative communities” she said tend to “value the preciousness of life,” Boebert noted that she and Jayson initially worried about whether their son and his partner would “choose life,” adding that when it was clear that the couple intended to see the pregnancy through, they were proud of them “for making that sacrifice and being selfless in that position....”

“This is a huge responsibility they are taking on. They made the right choice. Nothing was forced on them,” Boebert said, further observing that she also became a parent at a young age, as did her own mother, causing Tyler to quip that perhaps the phenomenon was “hereditary.”
