Schweizer: 'Fool’s Gold' Exposes Corruption In California

 March 14, 2025

A new book claims that some top Democratic figures in California are engaging in unethical practices to leverage their political power for personal gain. The book, Fool’s Gold: The Radicals, Con Artists, and Traitors Who Killed the California Dream and Now Threaten Us All, was released on March 11 and co-authored by investigative reporters Susan Crabtree and Jedd McFatter.

According to Breitbart, the book sheds light on alleged political corruption involving high-profile California Democrats, such as Gov. Gavin Newsom and others, proposing that their actions have negatively affected the state's residents.

The publication examines the financial entanglements and questionable practices of leading figures, according to the authors. Among those highlighted are figures such as Gavin Newsom, Adam Schiff, Kamala Harris, and Nancy Pelosi—people who have allegedly used their influence and networks for personal advantage.

Allegations Surrounding Governor Newsom

One of the most explosive claims involves Governor Newsom and his association with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). According to Crabtree and McFatter, PG&E contributed a substantial $2.5 million to the governor. This corporation has also been pointed to as responsible for the Camp Fire, the most devastating wildfire in the state’s history.

Further allegations suggest a deeper connection between PG&E and the Newsom family. The utility company reportedly provided $700,000 to Governor Newsom's wife for one of her personal initiatives. The funding was utilized to produce documentaries promoting themes consistent with transgender rights, which were then distributed to schools nationally.

These documentaries, sponsored by PG&E, generated considerable profit. Total earnings were cited at around $1.4 million, partly through sales to educational institutions. A private screening was even organized at PG&E’s headquarters, tying the corporation further to this endeavor.

Documentaries Garnering Controversy

Controversy doesn’t end with documentaries. In 2016, Newsom allegedly solicited funds using a specific payment system native to California. The "behested payment system" allows public officials to request donations for a cause, but in this case, it was allegedly for a bust of Newsom himself.

Jedd McFatter elaborates on this particular episode, suggesting that Newsom sought contributions from three different organizations for the statue project. It is hinted that two of these benefactors were companies owned by Newsom. This points to potential conflicts of interest that have significant implications for public trust.

Susan Crabtree argues that the state's media plays a role in sidelining concerns about such practices. She alleges that media companies have formed cozy relationships with the Democratic establishment, exacerbating the lack of accountability for these figures.

Impact of Immigration on California Politics

Crabtree also adds context to the political landscape, suggesting a vast Democratic majority due to demographic changes, particularly immigration. She points out that the state has a two-to-one ratio of Democrats to Republicans, which plays a significant role in the existing political hegemony.

Though some progress was noted in a recent election, Republicans remain outnumbered. Donald Trump, for instance, managed to secure 6 million votes compared to Kamala Harris’s 9 million—a significant gap that reflects the broader electoral context.

Eric Eggers, another observer, comments that this work could serve as an apt read for those in California holding liberal views. The book attempts to unravel a tapestry of conduct that the authors believe is damaging to a wider audience.

Reactions and Further Implications

Finally, Peter Schweizer questions why those involved in these practices face little to no challenge. Despite evidence of wrongdoing, the competence and ethics of these leaders remain largely unexamined, leading to a cycle of unchecked behavior.

The claims made in Fool’s Gold are certain to stir debate and contention in California's political circles. As discussions unfold, the prospect of change appears distant, with long-established power structures remaining firmly in place.
