Scrutiny Surrounds Walz's Ties to Chinese Leaders

 November 2, 2024

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also now Democratic Party vice-presidential nominee, is facing criticism over his longstanding relations with China, raising issues over potential foreign influence.

Walz's connections have prompted investigations into his affiliations with Chinese officials and institutions, following concerns about international interference in U.S. politics, as Fox News reports.

Chosen by Vice President Kamala Harris for the number two spot on the Democratic Party ticket, Walz has had his links with China questioned after a series of documents was uncovered by Fox News Digital.

These include a letter in which Walz highlights Minnesota’s interactions with China, proudly mentioning that the state has hosted numerous senior leaders from China.

Minnesota's China Connections Under The Spotlight

His praise extended to the Minnesota International Chinese School, celebrating its 10th year of Chinese New Year festivities, which he noted via a written message.

This communication from 2021 was later shared on the school’s YouTube channel and coincided with a video greeting from Zhao Jian, the Chinese Consul General in Chicago, recorded just days later.

This year, Walz and Zhao engaged in discussions surrounding the dynamics between China and the U.S., focusing on collaborations at state and regional levels.

These meetings, however, attracted attention from the House Oversight Committee, which is examining the influence of Chinese diplomatic missions within American borders.

Historical Ties with China Questioned

Walz's deep-rooted interactions with China trace back to his experience teaching English and American history in Guangdong in 1989.

There have been debates regarding the frequency of his travels to China, initially presumed to be numerous but later clarified by his campaign to be approximately 15 trips, accounting for visits that included his 1994 honeymoon.

Walz's stance on China has generally been cooperative rather than confrontational, as he acknowledges avenues for enhanced cooperation despite diverging viewpoints on significant issues like territorial disputes in the South China Sea. A historical account from 1991 reveals his depiction of the Chinese Communist framework, describing egalitarian aspects of lifestyle and work compensation.

Reflections on Treatment Received in China

Recalling experiences from long ago, Walz described his interactions during his overseas visits as exceptionally hospitable, acknowledging the abundance of gifts and warm receptions he received during his stays. His reflections highlight the generous reception that contributed to his perception of China over the years.

Concerns have emerged from a Department of Homeland Security official regarding Walz’s nomination for vice presidency, arguing that it could position him as a prime target for Chinese influence.

The official communication, addressed publicly by House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, highlights fears of intentional targeting by Chinese government-linked entities within the U.S.

Medical Institute's Chinese Links

Additionally, Walz's associations include a Minnesota-based medical research center collaborating with a Chinese firm tied to the military.

His involvement was evidenced in 2014 when he greeted a visiting group from China, which included an official from Henan Province holding long-term affiliations with the Communist Party.

These developments have fueled ongoing debates about the impacts of Chinese influence. As scrutiny intensifies, Walz’s engagements with China have sparked bipartisan discussions regarding the legitimacy and implications of such relationships in the political arena.

The story continues to evolve as more facets of Walz's interactions with China come to light, prompting both political and public discourse on international diplomacy and national security concerns.
